I'm relatively new to MPCs but from I bought mine from a very reliable seller that installed an after market non hot swappable CF reader. He said that with some of the after market card readers you may need to try a few cards before you find one that is compatible with the reader.... He sold me a 512 mb JaMedia card that worked fine, but he said that others he's tried haven't worked with the reader. This may be the case with yours.

I believe that will work. Upgrade the OS with the floppy then try again to use your CF card reader.
MPC-Tutor wrote:2000XL has the OS permanently stored on the internal flash memory, you shouldn't need to worry about the OS unless your mpc is running an old version. If you have the CF card reader then it should be running 1.20.

You can grab 1.20 from here, but I would imagine 1.20 will already be installed.
