Some questions about home recordings

Hey!! First of all let me show a little apprieciation to this whole community. Alot of good questions and answers, helpful to me as a new beatmaker.
Ey so I was thinking about buying myself a Mackie HDR 16 track digital recorder. Get a analog mixer with ind outs and all that. I very often would use a s950 wich is known for the lower bit rate. Also 2000xl but mainly as my sequencer. What I wonder is if I would loose to much quality with this recorder. Also I wonder if I can sync it with my 2000xl. I have read the manual but theese things didn't get explained in a level wich I could understand.

The quality would also depend heavily on what kind of analog mixer you would get.

As far as recording goes... i don't know your budget, but have you ever looked at the Tascam DA-3000?

I have recorded in several ways over the past 7-8 years. I started with a Soundblaster Soundcard recording directly into my computer, then had a Mac with an Apogee Duet interface (very nice but not 100% transparent), i recorded to an analog Revox tape machine and then into the Apogee... and in the end i got the Tascam DA-3000 as per recommendation from a friend.

The tascam is like a digital tape machine many people would claim. It's the most transparent high quality recording device i've heard so far. It doesn't lose quality, doesn't alter the sound... The recording will sound EXACTLY like what comes out of the mixing desk. It's seriously one of the best music gear purchases i've ever made. It's also great for recording vinyl... when i first got it i recorded some rare and classic Hip Hop albums and shared the files with a few friends here... a lot of them mentioned to me how outstanding the quality was.

HOWEVER: It's only a stereo device. Many inputs from unbalanced RCA to balanced XLR, digital, etc... but it's only stereo, not multiple channels. Plus it costs about 1k which can be daunting... but it's WELL worth it (has some of the best Burr Brown converters on the market, that's one reason it sounds so good).

Mackie recorders are great too from what people write about them on gearslutz.

Okey so I looked at the da 3000 and one thing comes to mind... must i get 16 preamps and 16 tascams if I wanna do 16 track mt recording? Or is the tascam more for mixing in a cpu? I mean good quality is obviously a big factor for good music but my computer have started to **** with me alot lately. So I was thinking about throwing it and go full hardware. But If I can record multiple tracks with play back on the da 3000 it would definitly be an option. If you look at the Mackie hdr it has inputs for recording and outputs for mixing/mastering (for each individual track/channel). Basicly a digital version of a classic reel to reel.
You were also mentioning the importance of a good sounding mixer. Is there any specific I should look into? Looking for something with direct outs for the recording. Have especially looked into soundcraft and mackie mixers. I wouldnt know if they sound ok or not but I need something that dont costs too much... Anyway, thanks for yr answer
