hey guys,

i've been sampling my records with a USB turntable I bought for cheap (Ion TTUSB05) directly in my MPC1000.
it's a pretty decent turntable but I thought about trying to sample with one of my technics MK2, through a Numark M6USB mixer in order to EQ my samples and be able to control the pitch. I was also thinking that the overall sound quality of the final sample will be better than with the Ion turntable.

I uploaded some audio files of samples recorded with both setups.
Note that the RCA of the turntables are plugged into the inputs of a turned-off M-AUDIO soundcard, and the TRS outputs of the soundcard are linked to the RECORD IN of the MPC. I tried to turn it on but it makes the sound barely audible and awful. I guess the turned-off soundcard is like a RCA/jack converter. Am I right?

I'd really appreciate your feedback, comparison and insights.
You'll see that the difference is really big when it comes to sound. The speed is also not the same.
I'm trying to understand which element plays a big role in that difference... The turntable itself? The cartridge even? The mixer?
I know all of them do to some extent, and i've been wanting to implement a mixer to my setup to tweak my samples before putting them in the MPC but I want to know until what point will the mixer influence on the sound quality.

Thoughts?

It is not surprising that your Technics turntable (I don’t know which one you own) with DJ mixer sound better than Ion TTUSB05 turntable.
TTUSB05 has very cheap phono preamp integrated (that’s why it has line out, instead of phono out), and the whole turntable is very cheaply made.
TTUSB05 doesn’t even have phono/line output switch so you cannot even bypass the cheap phono preamp in TTUSB05.

(I think product like TTUSB05 gives vinyl sound a bad rep for those who are new to vinyl records.)

If you use a dedicated phono preamp instead of DJ mixer, you can get even better sound quality. I’ve been ART DJPRE II phono preamp, and difference between my cheap DJ mixer and ART DJPRE II is night and day.

I think ART is seriously slept on.

Have you listened to the samples? I wouldn't say the quality is better with the Technics mk2. It has a lot more low frequencies to it.
The ART DJ PRE II seems fine but I couldn't EQs my samples before recording, and that's precisely what I want...

If you have to EQ before sample, just use your DJ mixer. I've never used the DJ mixer that you own, but I would think that the phono amp in the mixer is better than Ion's, and you can EQ.
Most of the time I'd sample from vinyls dry (without EQ, no effects applied), but I clean my vinyls before I sample. I have Spin Clean Record Cleaner, which my record cleaning duty so much easier, faster and effective. I also recommend using a rubber mat instead of slipmat, because you'll get better result, especially low frequency.

With proper set up, you can get pretty good result with budget system.
