the 808 boom is largely a result of stuff done to the sample (effects and EQ) that make it boom. try a quick compress and eq out the highs a little and then maybe that will give you some more BOOOOMMMMM like an 808......

take a kick and change the parameter from -1 thur -240. this shouls give you that deep 808 sound.

the 808 boom does not need eq and effects. with the decay long and if you need more you can add the accent to the kicks.

it does sound better with compression, but the boom doesn't require it.

no eq for an 808? what are you, joking? you have to eq it, especially if you have a bassline or it will be ALL muddy.
The freq. of the 808 kick is right there with the basslines, you gotta eq the 808 to carve out an area so that it can be heard without overpowring the bass. This isnt my idea, Dan the Automator wrote an article about how he samples and makes tracks and this was a major part of it, eqing kicks to blend with bass.

no dis foo,

I've got one here. to get the boom, you don't have to eq ( although boosting the bass will wobble your windows) I'm not saying you don't need to eq your basslines in a track, but you don't need to eq to get the boom.

(touching my 808 now)

hey Dr. Foo where is that article, and do you have those deep boom bass sounds?

I think it was in BPM magazine around the time LOVAGE came out. I'm not at my pad I will try to remember to check when I get home. The article also explained how dan uses compression on his drums and why (bascially, compress, rebus back thru the mixer, EQ, mix this one with a dry drum track that is only equed the same.= meaty drums.

and yes, you do need to eq to get the boom. why? cuz once you have it in a track w/ a bass it wont boom. it will get all muddy.

the BOOM is a distinct sound. but it also has to be equed so that it dont drown out other stuff.
an 808 in a track needs to be treated like a real drum, IE its not the loudest thing in the track, by loweing the volume or velocity, you lose that boom!
If you stick a 808 in a track you can lower the level, to make it mix w/ the bass, but then you lose the BOOM. ur sacrificing the boom of the 808 to make it sound good in the mix. to be able to lower the level of the 808 so it fits in its proper place (IE the drums are not supposed to be louder then the bass in most hip hop tracks this makes them sound REALLLLLY bad) and has the BOOM! still at this lowered vol. (so that it fits in the mix) you need to eq it so it fits in with the bass track, you have to carve out a freq. niche where the 808 sits and can BOOM and the BOOM is not being covered by the bassline. this will allow the 808 to boom and NOT to muddy up with the bassline. This is how you can get a slamming DEEP bassline and a BOOMING 808 in the same track and have it not sound cluttered.
I assume he plans to use the 808 with a bass track of some sort if he is making a song (who just uses a drum without bass?)
not eqing 808 kicks just means muddy tracks or sacrificing the BOOM to get it to fit in.
I also have access to an 808, so what? everyone and their mom has 808 samples. what does owning an 808 have to do with using the samples from it?

Senor Foo- Definitely let us know where you got that Dan the Automator article from. The Lovage album totally changed my view of arranging samples to sound musical.

Keepintouch;
You can create the sound of the 808. They are actually synthetic drum sounds anyway. I recently read an article on creating them on VST instruments. And it works. This way, you can create the specific kind of Boom you ae looking for and also create variations of that sound.

If you want to try it out let me know.

If you just want some 808 sounds, I can hook you up with those too.

Peace.

Foo, I totally agree re: in the track, but the 808 booms by itself, that was the distinction I was trying to make.

Sure, lots of 808's around, just saying that I can make it boom without eq (anyone can) I always eq my tracks, be they 808 bass or whatever. No need for hostility, I'm agreeing with you.

I took the 808 sounds out of Fruity Loops and loaded them on the MPC

the wav files BD_1010 and BD_2 or good boom sounds to use

Another option is to get Propellorheads ReBirth which emulates both the TR808 and TR909. It allows you to export in WAV format.
