sup everyone,

I just copped an MPC 500....this is my first go at hardware and i'm very stoked for that. Since i'm used to programming shit on a timeline editor inside a DAW, etc, I was wondering if the step editors in the MP's allowed you to "program" (not sure if that's the right term for my question) an individual drum hit – but not necessarily through recording where you have the metronome on and you’re recording in real time….

An example of what I’m referring to is -- typically when I’m starting an idea/beat, I like to lay down my snare hits and kicks on all the 1’s (before I do any music/samples) just to get a very very basic foundation started. Then I’ll start chopping samples to fit with this and whatever tempo I’m working with. Afterwards I’ll start live recording other kick/snare hits in to create a “feel” ….

Is it possible to program your snares and kicks like that OR do any hits have to be recorded in where you have to “play it in live” – for a lack of another phase…

you can use step editor to record drum hits as you are describing....but it would be easier to just quantize to (1/8) and record - that will keep a very basic rigid drum loop

(this is the 2000xl / 2000 forum - I've never used a 500)

Step edit is very useful either to shift stuff about/entering loops or small corrections.
Even if you record with quantize on if you miss a bit or hit if off sometimes it's just easier to correct it than having to re-record it again especially if the rest was tight,

I believe this thing I drew will simplify it for most people..

I can't edit the original post but I did make a little error on the original that some one on this forum kindly corrected.

Personally I find step edit makes things easier
You can press stop go back and take out a isolated note, shift its timing, adjust parameters and like mentioned above by other dudes, that s a lot less accurate if it is done in a real time record , Delete biz.
Also, you get to see what it sounds like backwards

I don't understand how some MPC users don't realize how essential step mode is.
To me MPC would be almost useless if there were no step mode.

I stole the idea from Vinyl Junkies’ drawing. I added triplets.
