How is my .ALL file larger than my .APS

Hi,

Please excuse my ignorance.

My .APS file has over 100 samples in it. Some super short drum hits, some loops.
My .ALL file has only two 8 bar sequences on it.

How is it possible that .ALL size = 56K
and .APS size = 15L

Would the .APS file not be way larger than the 2 sequences contained in .ALL?

I'm obviously missing something.

15L? maybe 15MB?

I also have one, more pressing question.

I have my beats saved in individual folder.
For instance with my beat "Give", I have done the following:
-Created new folder in ROOT and named it "GIVE"
-Saved a copy of .APS and .ALL into "GIVE" folder

so far my GIVE folder looks like this:
-GIVE.ALL
-GIVE.APS
-sounds
-sounds
-sounds. etc etc etc

Now I deleted all sequences and programs not relating to my "GIVE" beat, So I am only left with 1 sequence and 1 program. so far so good!



I am doing this for each of my beats, so that way I have a separate folder for all of my beats with corresponding .ALL and .APS which contain only the files associated with that beat.

Now the only thing left to do is to PURGE the sounds that are not required.

I click purge, and am left with only the sounds which i require for my GIVE beat. Great!

Here is where things go weird.


I save GIVE.APS and GIVE.ALL into my GIVE folder (stored in ROOT)
and select YES to "Replace same sounds"

When I take a look at my GIVE folder all the sounds which I purged (and did not appear in TRIM, which is a good sign) all the sounds which I purged are still there.

So far the only solution I found is to manually delete all the sounds i don't require.

What am I missing?

if previously saved to disk, purge wont delete from there... it just deletes sounds not assigned to a program. unless you are saying that is the case and it isn't working properly.. then I don't know what to tell you. lampdog is a 2000xl master.

you are doing it right - i also keep projects in their own folder.

you are however misunderstanding PURGE - that is only for memory, it doesn't delete the sounds from the card/disk.

to do what you want, load up your aps and all files into memory, do your purge (probably wont matter if you already saved it after purge), create a new folder called something like give2, then re-save your aps and all WITH WAV (or WITH SND) into this new folder. the new folder will only contain the appropriate files now. you can then delete the old one...but i'd always double-double check before you do that. maybe save once onto the same card, and then get a new card that is strictly for your cleaned-up beats folders.

and to further clear up some confusion, i don't believe ALL files are just a table of contents, an ALL file actually does contain the sequence data. i say this because you can save an ALL file and it will never create any individual sequence files unless you specifically tell it to. APS and ALL are fundamentally different like that and it can be confusing.

I am only able to create files within the root folder. So at the moment all my individual beats are saved in folders, within ROOT. Are you saying that you are able to have folders which are not stored in root at all?

GIVE, you failed when you started saving to ROOT. Me, I keep my library of samples in ROOT.
I then choose my samples, make a beat, purge, create GIVE folder and save APS, ALL SEQ, MID, PGM and all associated samples in RAM to GIVE folder. In that order. Don't resave a song or any parts of it back into ROOT. If you need another sample from ROOT put it on a pad and overwrite existing APS in GIVE folder. APS will only find files within the same folder with the same filename saved with it. If you change a filename APS will not be able to find it.

Like I said, my ROOT is a library of samples, blank template of a chromatic PGM, template of ALL for mixer settings related to my effects board and 8 outs. I use those templates when starting a new project
