Nothing in mainstream consensus. It wouldn't be scientific, anyway, at least in terms of carbon dating and DNA. It would rely on valid historical bookkeeping by Roman govt., etc.

indeed the booth was closed to the public and invite/pre-set up only.

I didnt know this when I walked up but was able to get in as i wanted to see the mpc x up close and personal.

side note, and to my surprise, DJ Qbert was in there talking to mr. andy mac. Q was mostly interested in the MPC live since it was smaller and ran on a battery. he also asked about things such sas "Can it connect to the internet" (no), and "can you put your own unique splash screen" ostensibly so that is someone was turning it on and saw someone's personal splash /boot up screen, they would know whose it was. Qbert took copious notes on his iphone and he was definitely sold on the mpc live.

i got to talk with q briefly and he was a solid cat, down to earth and a bit humble.

the reason it was roped off was because akai (or inmusic the parent) had a lot of requests for their new products and the parent inmusic wanted a more personal, dedicated hands on experience with potential distributors rather than a lot of people buzzing about. they also had catered food and alcohol/drinks. very intimate setting with some tables.

Once Mr. andy mac was finish with Q, hs was whisked off to meet yet another interested group of people who wanted to see the X up front and personal. seems this was only set up for media types and "special" guests (such as Q/people who have a following).

Mr. Andy Mac just told me "go ahead have a go, get busy with it" and ran out to meet that other group i mentioned.

lol that same old rihanna mix was cued up so i played it and twisted some knobs. things i noticed:

the OS was quite responsive.
the screen can be moved and left in place without having to use the kickstand. handy of you want to adjust on the fly.

knobs were solid. no "play" in them. the oled screens/squibble strips were clear and easy to read in the dimly lit atmosphere.

the pads were solid, quality. you can aso change the color scheme of them.

there were a LOT of vocal stems/samples, lots of beats and many demo songs in the unit.

screen was baby's bottom smooth.

I have a 1991 purchased s950 and I used to have an MPC2KXL. sold it last year and focused only on triggering my s950 with a beatstep pro. i was happy with this setup until i saw the X, now after being able to play it for a bit, I really think this is indeed a game changer that many cats who are looking to unplug the mpc from the computer will love.

OH! Got to meet nick blatt too! I was talking to Mr. Linn and nick came down and gave him a "best chap" ribbon, so Mr. Linn was wearing this big old green ribbon on his shirt.

Mr. Dave smith was growing tired of shaking hands and kissing babies but he was ever so charming nonetheless.

Yeah I was super excited to see the new MPCs in person but was disappointed that the room was roped off.

However, I was thinking the big bosses must be in that room making big deals with people so the absence of goof balls like me in there asking a ton of questions was why they wanted it roped off. Oh well!

you are pretty much on point. a cat that was in line behind me was from "music canada" or some such of a name. suit and tie fellow.

all of the gentleman in that room all wore suits! a couple of cats were sitting down in deep discussions. it was certainly business focused in there.

from the outside of the booth looking into the booth, you can't see any products, which may have been by design.

i lurk! I have not had anything to post of value. heck im an over 5 year veteran at gearslut and not ever posted there.

with all due respect, nothing anecdotal about what I wrote. I played the X and those statements I made are my opinions from actually using it. they had 3 X's in there and 3 lives.

in regards to why it was roped off, this was the explanation I was given buy this nice looking lady up front when I queried her about the room being roped off. everything else I saw with my own eyes.

Thanks marctronixx for clearing that up. To think I was going to go for the AKAI booth mainly myself. I'm glad that I couldn't go although I'm sure the other products were awesome as well. Still that is some good feedback. Thanks again.

From the outside looking in I was only able to see a few people standing around. All wearing suits and ties. I can attest to what you said there was nothing visible from the outside but the few folks I saw standing around inside the room.

I know someone from another major music instrument manufacturer and he was telling me that all of the upper management from his company attends NAMM. The company he works for is also on the second floor where Akai had their room. He said all of those rooms have private rooms attached so that the owner/upper management can meet privately to discuss deals.

He was telling me for his company to go they spend major dollars because they know at NAMM they will be making big bucks.

For whatever reason Akai chose to do it this way it would have been neat just to have a little place to show off their stuff to anyone interested.

At least I got to see the Teenage Engineering booth which was super small.

They should open it on the last day to the public. Or they could at least put out a sign that says:

Day 1 acces granted to invited guests
Day 2 acces granted to invited guests
Day 3 acces granted to invited guests
Day 4 acces granted to public

Or something like that.

At least put out a schedule. I understand that they want to do business but those guys wearing those suits won't be the end users.
