Am I right that the "only" difference between Live and X is more ins/outs, more knobs and a bigger display? They can do the same things, right?

The software is the same, i.e. MPC Software 2.0. Remember that the Live also has unique hardware features, such as the internal battery, smaller footprint, portability etc. I believe the X will also come with additional Air Music instruments not available with the Live, but I think these will just be a separate install.

Alright. I wonder if it would be possible to connect a knobby MIDI controller to the "Live", if I want more knobs for live performance. That would be a pretty flexible setup

Isn't that what the MPC 'X' is for?

I believe the USB ports can be used to connect usb MIDI controllers.

The MPCX is nearly twice the price of the Live so I'd imagine combining the Live with an existing controller might prove popular to those on a tighter budget.

Whats the Air instruments? I know the X will have 16 gig HD but 10 gigs of that will be taken up by sounds.

Yes you can. That's where the magic is. Im planning to rock the X with Reason 9 and use it as a controller with the knobs. Once l do my drums k can drag and drop them into Reason or Studio One 3 the let the games begin.
In studio one 3 l will be able to control all the knobs in S1 and when l open up my Eastwest instruments l can contol all the knobs on the SSL 4000 Oxford England cause l can di that now with the lpd8 and it only has 8 knobs. Can you imagine what l can do with 16 knobs?

So yes you van get down with the Live the way you want.

Actually I won't be traveling at all, so I don't really care about mobility.

However, I'm not sure that I can justify the X's price over the Live and that's because the X doesn't have any extra feaures, from what I understand. Sure, all the knobs and extra buttons help with workflow, but the Live can do everything the X can for half the price (correct me if I'm wrong).[/quote][/quote]

Can it do or have the same as the X? In the software yes.
1. In standalone mode can Live match with the X ? Probably.
2. Both machines are not equal when it comes to outside functions. If you need Cv/Gate you won't get that on Live. If you want a tilt screen X has it not Live.
And other things X has that Live don't on the outside.

Yes you can. That's where the magic is. Im planning to rock the X with Reason 9 and use it as a controller with the knobs. Once l do my drums k can drag and drop them into Reason or Studio One 3 the let the games begin.

I think what Hønse means is connecting an external hardware midi controller to the Live and control the parameters within the standalone Live. Like connecting a midi controller to your daw to control the levels, pans, sends etcetera in your daw. But in this case the daw is your standalone mpc Live. As I've ordered the Live i'm really hoping for it. I've got a Behringer BCR2000 (which is great). If you could connect a controller like that and set it up to control different parameters from the sixteen pads like the X does, it would be nearly the same as the 16 Q-links on the X. Without the OLED displays. On the BCR2000 (leds but not OLED) you have 32 knobs and you can switch through presets with a dedicated button. Only would take an hour to set every midi cc for the Live.
I think Andy Mac mentioned somewhere that you can hook up an external midi controller to control certain parameters, but I don't know how many parameters are midi assignable. Still no manual. I want to read the manual for some pre-fun!
If it isn't possible then I'll be ok with switching trough the four Q-link banks. But the more one knob a function the better. So maybe next year I'll buy the X too.

I wonder how big gonna be the box for the X. I remember buying the MV8800 brand new and when UPS showed at my door, I thought they were delivering a refridgerator. Biggest package in my life!

I read somewhere that the A/D and D/A converters are better in the MPC X. So if that is important to you then get the X.

It is a big boat of a sampler. I just got one delivered recently to my work. Last week. Brand new old stock. Already has an ssd now and 102,500 of my samples on it, plus all the Roland released mfx bass patches and stock content from included cd's.

Big gal samplers need lovin too. I'm sure the svelte X will be sexier on the outside, but will it love me back like the MV???

yeah thats why I'm getting the LIVE, to test the new MPC waters. MV is my studio box, versatile and myriads of effects, my favorite being OLDSAMPLR, filters clean basslines from records without debris from other instruments. If the LIVE proves to be better, I may convert

So i'm looking through the quickstart guide, and I'm seeing:

"USB-B Port: Use the included USB cable to connect this high-retention-force USB port to an
available USB port on your computer. This connection allows MPC Live to send/receive MIDI
and audio data to/from the MPC software on your computer.
You can power MPC Live via the USB port only, but the display will be disabled."

Does this mean that in controller mode, you would need to be plugged in to an outlet to have the screen? Aka the battery only works in standalone??
