how do you guys do your bass?..

These are all great suggestions but if your sample is at the original tempo just play up and down the piano until you find what key on the piano it correlates to. If it is pitch shifted find the key on the piano that it is closest to and then use the fine tuning to get it into that key.

Once you know what key its in then its easy. Look up the scale for that key and all those notes should fit with your sample. You can use the piano included with the software or another vst. Even if you dont have a midi keyboard you can still do it with the key roll at the bottom of the screen. The pads all correlate to different notes on the keyboard and when you play them the key will turn blue.

As for finding a key or tuning my song to a key (whenever i can be arsed to do such thing): I just let my loop play, and then in a DAW, I open a simple synth with the simplest waveform, and I play it and find the key it matches with. If my song needs tuning, this method will tell me. Because your soft synths will never be out of tune, but your song may be (if you start crafting your song around a sample that's out of tune, for example).

personally I think you cant fug with bass that's been made with the low end theory....

that's where those warm basses reach out and hug you..........that smooth soulful sound....a sound that's more than just a sound....its a feeling too....

I don't think you get that with VST's.....

The other issue that could be conflicting is your kick drum. It may have too much low end sustain which would mean some bass notes will fight or cancel each other out...If you've sampled from vinyl you would also get turntable hum, which can also cause some issues if the sample is quiet on record..
I cheat and use sidechaining... Or play bass without tc and let the bass sit lazy on the beat..(falling or striking just after the kick and snare hits) It creates space so that the bassline and kick and snare hits so they both can be heard and enjoyed with violent head snapping

I love all types of Bass.. But playing live bass guitar is the dopest....

Was about to recommend this. Learn bass and play your own basslines. Though I don't play on a bass, I have an acoustic guitar and took off the thin strings to play basslines. I love how it resonates off the wood.

I had a guy make me a stick bass... YEs it's literally a stick with a nail on one end and a spoon on the other... with one bass string atached.. HE made this pick up on it..which resonated off the stick and spoon.. When you plug it into a bass rig it sounds like a upright bass.. ITs soo Phat.. Hard to play though ... I ended up just making a pgm in mpc with it...

9th Still Knew how a scale works to use maschine like that though.. He didn't just RAndomly play the pads until he thought it fit.. The bass sounds right and the notes fit because he knows what the root note of the samples he is using(can be by ear or knowing the exact note)... That's not something a machine will teach you or do for you as you still have to set some paramters up for it to work for you. Listening to Music will , and learning the basic minor and major scale will ... Once you know the scales you can transpose the instrument into the key you want to be in.. Wether you get lessons, watch youtube tutorials or get it naturally it takes time and practice to apply it to your own work.

For any type of instrument/keygroup sample etc you want to layer over your sampled beats there are two scales you should learn.. The MAjor and Minor Scale.. IT is the Relative Gaps between each semi note that makes this up.. Its math...
Mostly almost all hiphop stuff is Minor, while mainstream happy good vibe pop is major...

I play a bass guitar. When not using the instrument thru a boss gt10b I use the boss dr880.
Why do Imention this? The dr880 is one of the easiest ways to learn bass.
The easiest is buying an older boss dr5. That has chords on dedicated buttons. It also has a six string bass layout.
Sit down and watch a video explaining majors, minors , pentatonics and other scales. Then you will be set. Popular song s don't use a lot of keys in a song like jazz.

u dont really need to know the key and ll that stuff; u can do it all by ear
