What Size SSD for MPC Live?

That's why the operative word in the question is "expect"!

Anyway, you'll likely need to connect to the computer to install the update that will make it so you don't have to connect to the computer!!! THAT's the paradox!

I have no problem connnecting the unit up to grab a firmware update. I do that for my ob6, tempest, tr09,vp03...

Being able to load up a new disk whilst out in the field and format it for use whilst untethered SHOULD be included on a machine that is designed to not be connected to the computer to work.

Its a minor thing and im not going to slit my wrist for it. Just something I expected on the machine.

i just got my Live, and installed a crucial 525gb 2.5 SSD inside. I followed the steps in the embedded videos here, but neither of my macs do the popup window saying that something unrecognizable is plugged in. I go to finder and there is nothing listed there either. When i start up the MPC software the Live and the computer do communicate properly.

I've checked in browse/places as well, and there is no hard drive showing. I'm gonna make sure it's seated properly, but anyone have any ideas otherwise?

It was a pia to use ilok (my first experience with it). I loaded the MPC software and iLok since the SSD wasn't recognized. I thought maybe that needed to be set up before the computer would recognize the SSD in the Live.

EDIT: I made sure drive cable is clicked in place fully, still no way to format like the video earlier in this thread shows. I did notice that in the video he's using a newer macbook. Is there a hardware limitation? I have a mid 2010 iMac and a 2014 Macbook Pro. Neither one seems to detect anything plugged in until i run the MPC software, but then it still doesn't show as an external drive.

please help! this is driving me bonkers.

I went thru this shit yesterday, put it in controller mode is how to get the format window to pop up

I did put it in controller mode. It's doesn't stop saying "looking for computer" on the MPC, and the computer NEVER gets a pop up window.

May I ask what kind of computer you're using? Or maybe more importantly how old it is?

wow. solved it...and i have an update that i hope helps others.

I have a mid 2010 iMac (no usb 3.0) and a late 2013 mbp retina (first ever with usb 3.0, so they haven't been extremely reliable as far as functionality with various devices, card readers, hubs etc.)

I was about to take my drive to a friend's house to dock it externally to format it exFat, but i gave it just one more shot on the mbp. This time, however, i left the blue stock usb cable plugged into the laptop (port on the right), and then after the mpc's screen says "looking for computer" i plugged the cable into the mpc. THIS made the "unrecognized disk" prompt appear on the computer. FINALLY! I spent about half of today trying to get it to be seen. That was crazy.

So, if you're using a late 2013 mbp plug into the computer first, and the mpc second. (reverse of what the guy does in the posted video)

looking forward to starting my vinyl mining journey tomorrow!!!

Didn't pay attention you stated HD and not SSD.

And HD will certainly drain the battery quickly as the drive is constantly spinning.

You'd be better off with an SSD. I have a 250gb SSD Samsung and I can go 6 ish hours with the thing on constantly. Ive had this machine for a week now (got it last Monday) I take it to the "office" so that i can get used to this workflow. The screen dims after a bit if im not using it but it stays on until I pack up to roll out.

Get an SSD - less battery drain, silent and less prone to damage during transport.

And about 10x faster.

I thought the prices of SSD's came down but the bigger sizes are still pretty high.

awesome! i figure either 1tb or maybe a 2tb internal but that is a TON of space...
i won't be moving mine out of my house so i'm not so worried about transporting it. basically moving from the studio to the couch for farting around.
