I wouldn't say that I never compress my drums or never apply an effect because in some situation it is critical, and a must if you are looking for a certain vibe. Sometimes I would apply the OD/High Gain on my drum tracks, and apply a little bit of EQ and that shyt will give you a "in your face" dirty distorted sound.
I would not say that you need to compress every drum track, but do it only when it's necessary, but don't limit yourself on just the compression.

nice jedi mind quote there man

i always compress main melody unless i'm going for a "poor recording" kinda sound in which i compress a little but then eq up the mids to bring out the sound while dampening the bass and the trebs

i always always compress vocals too and quarter the sound of breath intake

however i haven't **** with drum compression. i'm very interested though, is there a link i can get a professional tutorial from? otherwise i'll just do it the old fashioned way and give it hell myself.

some people are getting confused between compressing individual hits and compressing a whole beat- just because your drums may already be compressed doesn't mean you can't compress the beat as a whole as that gives you a different effect...if you have sampled from many different compressed sources but still feel the beat on the whole is lacking that bang then compression will not only help gel the sounds together but also create a new affect through the interaction of the drums through the compressor so just because your individual drum hits are compressed doesn't mean you cant add more to the beat as a whole...
