Elektron's New Drum/Sampler/Sequencer

Just popped into my head but I imagine that the vintage modes on the live might really come in handy. I will check it out when I get home.

I hate the idea of having 2 samplers, but the DT impressed me so much that I just had to buy it. Of course it doesn't replace the Live/X, although I wonder how they are both going to fit in my workflow.

Right now and without owning either, I'm thinking Live/X for sample heavy hip hop with lots of chops etc, and DT for EDM stuff, and coming up with weird shit in general.

What is it that you are trying to do exactly?

Make patterns using both and having the sounds mesh well. It's going to take some time to find the right flavor. Only had the live a month and digi 2 days...

I'd say the you're right with the live for more modern transparent stuff but the digi I think could give you that old hiphop flavor. Not sure if that's your thing though.
The digi will do edm stuff nicely but it's going to give it the old sampler vibe imo. The sequencer is dope and they can evolve if you want them to.

The way I see it is doing banging drums and basslines/ daw work on the live. And getting some dirty samples and layered drums underneath the live's drums for the digi.

It going to take some time to figure out a good work flow however and I may do a 180 for all I know.

Live= modern daw in a box; ableton, FL Studio etc

Digi= the vintage samplers all had a baby and a digi popped out, some modern features and a baller sequencer but overall old school flavor.

Old school is definitely my thing, I guess I'll have to try both although I also believe that it's going to sound much better on the DT. Might also pick up a Heat at some point, that would help even more.

That leaves the Live with a lot less duties.

I'm not in a rush though. Since I'm getting the DT now I can wait and see how things pan out with the Live/X, before I get one of those, or skip them altogether. DT should be more than enough, for now at least!

I started working on a track last night with some old vinyl samples. I believe that's where the digi will excel, could be wrong. I'll post it later tonight, hopefully can give you a better idea.

Overbridge will go along way when t release it. Be really slick to track it out and track out the live for some proper mixing.

You know, I never saw it this way, I mean using the DT for sample heavy music. Chopping and playing is so much easier with the touch screen and pads of the Live. I was going to use it mostly for one shots, synths etc. I'll try all possible workflows, though.

So I have the Digi and the X. Digi is fun to get a dope track down quick and easy. my plan is toe then port those tracks to the X and use them as Clips to create a performance (mutes, solos, xyfx etc) and add embellishments beyond the Digi's 8 tracks.

No you're right about the digi, one shots syn stuff will be it's workload. I'm saying on you get the sound down itl be a perfect tool to flavor a specific sample.

If you were to get an asr 10 or an sp1200 or whatever vintage sampler would that be your studio centerpiece or more of tool in conjunction with the live?

Clips would be a great use of the digi.

I'd never get either of those, just because 1 sampler is more than enough.
I did an exception for the DT though, there's something about it's sequencer that hits me up in a very creative way, if that makes any sense. It's a little box of wonders, capable of happy accidents, which (probably) can't be done with the Live.

I'm pretty sure we're talkin about the same thing here. Perhaps I am not the best at explaining things.

I'll try to get a small taste up for ya tonight, but you will see what I'm talking about tomorrow when you get the digi

Got my Digi

Only messed with it for a couple of hours, most of that time I had no idea what I was doing, struggling even with the simplest things.. It's a totally new workflow for me, I gotta study the manual a bit!

I loaded some of my sounds, made a very basic pattern, played with the effects etc, it's a lot of fun! And most importantly, it sounds amazing, MUCH better than my 2500. Can't wait to dive deeper tomorrow
