Magneto-Optical Disk on MPC2000?

Hi guys!

I have an MPC2000 and I got an old Fujitsu Magneto-Optical disk drive wich comes with scsi connection.
I tried to work with it like an external hard drive and mpc recognize the device, anyways an unexpected error ocurred with scsi port number 6, and doesn't allow me to use the M-O. Any of you can bring some help with that?

There are some kind of little switches in the back (6, I guess) for turn the magneto-optical drive into a mac platform or a PC one, any knowledge about the thing would be appreciated a lot.

Yes, the problem was solved easily, I just changed the switch number 6 and now the device runs perfect.

That bit oof scsi number info could also have been found in the manual. :lol:

I guess not all of us have the manual...

I plan on purchasing an external magneto optical disk drive. I own an MPC2000. I've read countless threads on the unreliability of the external zip drives. I hope all of this works.

Also, I have a library of old MPC60 floppy disk files. Are they cross compatible with the MPC2000?

I think distortedtekno has an MO drive in his 2000XL so an external will be be great for your 2000.
You mentioned the reliability of Zip drives. IMHO... Zip100 drives totally suck and will fail, Zip250 drive was a little better than the Zip100 but still was crappy, the Zip750 was way better since it read and wrote to Zip750 & Zip250 disks but only read from Zip100 disks, and the Jaz 1GB & 2GB drives I never had problems with.

Not having a manual is no excuse when it's here on this website up top in "MPC Resources" drop down to "MPC Manuals".

It's been there forever and we've been saying/pointing peeps to it forever so if you've actually read countless threads you would have ran across that info.

M.O drives work nice with Mpc 2000's, Distorted Techno advised me to get one and I'm glad I did, bigup that dude.
Don't leave them on all night though cus they tend to make the Mpc crash if they overheat (in my experience)
What I do with mine is change the 'device field' to 'floppy drive' and eject the disk when I'm not using it.

But It's the most reliable storage solution I've used with a Mpc2ooo so far.
Being able to save your ish is probably one of the most important aspects, I've lost so many beats in the past.
I think Mr Gold Letters Aka Lampdog also dropped some knowledge once along the lines of "save every 3 changes" which I adhere to also.
You never know when you'll get Error Code 11116677711 and that's it, machines stuck. All you can do is use the last saved version, narm means : ) Destiny strikes again.

Why would you have to change the device field to floppy to eject the disk?
Which brand and model drive are you using?
I'm still using the Fujitsu MCJ3230SS with no issues. If the drive is not acessed for 1/2 hour, it will go into sleep mode to reduce power consumption, noise, and wear n' tear. No issues at all with overheating, and mine is installed internally without a cooling fan. The MCR3230SS should work just as good if you happen to find them.

I forget which MPC 60 files are compatible with the 2000. But I can tell you more about MO drives if you need to know. I prefer the Fujitsu drives for the reasons I stated above. Also keep in mind that with the 2000, you can only use disks that are 512 bytes per sector. So when using a 3.5" drive, that means you can use disks that are 128mb, 230mb, and 540mb capacity, as long as the drive supports that capacity. The 5.25" disks offer more capacity options than the 3.5" disks. But it's tougher to keep organized with larger disk capacity when the 2000's file system doesn't support or recognize folders. That's why I make as many 32mb partitions as possible and use them as if they were folders. However, trying to remember what's on so many partitions can be a hassle. So 230mb disks with 7 partitions is the most ideal recommendation I can offer. 540mb disks formatted to 16 partitions (if I remember correctly) is ok. But they're hard to find and a bit pricey. You can find 230mb for around $5 a piece if you keep checking ebay. You might find the Fujitsu drives for $30 if that seller still has them.
