If you had 10 elements of drums you can do them on all on track 1. When you decide that's enough drums then you can explode track 1. Track one will mute then you will have all your done drums you did on individual tracks. So you should have 11 tracks that will include track one thst is muted. Erase track one out of your way so you won't get confused. I haven't been on the mpc 2000XL since 2012 but l knew it well. Once you get that good you can never forget.
Then there's another explode when exporting stems out into a folder so you can put those stems in your favorite DAW. This is done when you chose export.
