Thanks to the idiots at Nukai...

:Sigh:

Thanks to a bunch of idiots who routinely missuse the word, thanks to other idiots who run with that twisted meaning all the while wishing for outrageous shit, and yes, thanks to Akai's twisting of the word too.

Yes. It is not a "standalone challenge". Which peice of gear is standing alone making music?

Then none of the vids are standalone cause they used a keyboard or something with the machine.

I guess their thought on standalone is not using software with the MPC live or x

I think you're right. Standalone is imo ONLY one machine that is "standing alone".
It needs nothing else to make music, it doesn't need help or additions. Hardware standalone, IDK if live/x came with sames on the hdd, if it did, those would ONLY be used. If it did not then of course you'd HAVE to sample your own in, no other gear though.

Now the mpc x and live can do both, so to be fair we also need to examine the other side of it.

It's also a controller, so mpc software ONLY, no outside samples, only samples that came with it, then imo that would be stand alone too. A more flexible standalone yes but ONLY stuff that came with the mpc.

Someone may ask, what about a controller with no software from the same company, well, there is NO way it can be stand alone then because it would need outside samples, program, app.

Those are the only ways I'd call something a standalone.

From the looks of it, dude it WELL equipped with skill enough to do damage on any peice he touches. This vid is not standalone imo though.

Obviously we're getting into semantics here, but a "standalone" video with someone using just the Live or the X would be most interesting to me as well. I'm all for minimalism!

I'm struggling as to whether or not I should add an SH-01A to my current crowded setup of my Live and Bass Station II or not ... would I use all three? Should I lose one of the others if I add the new? Argh! It's questions like these that keep me up all day ...

'Standalone' in 2017 just means hardware that doesn't need to be tethered to a computer to function. It doesn't matter if he's using a cheap keyboard or a 30 grand modular.

The fact that it's probably been tracked back into a computer to be mixed and mastered is another story though. :smoker:

The term STANDALONE is actually a great topic as I too feel people have different understandings of the word and for good reason, we never had to use that term until MPC's went the software route! I would definitely call this STANDALONE, it's a sampler and sequencer ,he did just that, how is this any different from sampling records or sampling anything in? His talent is the sounds he creates with his modular rig to be sampled and sequenced by the MP... Almost like saying the old school 2kxl + Triton combo wasn't STANDALONE, that's pretty much STANDALONE imho of course!
The music really didn't move me tho but he did put on a great display of the X...

Gotcha. I see both sides. I have no beef about it.
The material that come with the machines is not everyone's tea and they couldn't do what they want. That dude is a beast and what he uses. I seen Scoot storch do tbe standalone test. He used a keyboard but had a guy play his drums on the X. He didn't basically use the X the guy did so some would say he didn't use it so Scott didn't take the standalone test.

I eould condider sampling in the X or live the chopping up and using the machine in standalone.

That's the definition that Akai is using as standalone and l have no quams over it.

Doing a mix and mastering later is just that mixing and mastering.

You hit it on the head. Doing a track without the compert is standalone. Thats how l use to do it back in the day.

I agree with this l had the 2000XL and Korg Trinity and Triton Rack and made music without a computer.

The problem is the video is to short and we don't know what Rich is doing or what exactly the MPC X is doing .
I think it's brilliant I hope they show us more of Rich's workflow there .
I think standalone means no computer and if you do use outboard gear you can recorded it all with no computer .

Exactly ! No computer involve means standalone. That's what akai is saying.

That's what l thought the vid was to short. But l bet he will make his own and lma check it out and down load them and keep them.

"Us3ql2O9adI" is what you posted and will go between:
