Hi all,

New to the forum so thought I would introduce myself and also ask a question too.
I am a complete new MPC owner never had one before and I've just bought a MPC X.

I have bought a Samsung 2.5" SSD 500gb hard drive. I've followed the video on you tube which shows the instructions on installing it in the MPC X/MPC live. So it's all fitted and I've successfully managed to connect the pc (running windows 10) to the MPC X via USB lead . I've tested to connection from MPC 2.0 and when I press the pads from the software I see them light up on the MPC X. So I assume it's communicating fine.

However I cannot see an attached storage device connected at all when I go to 'my computer'

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome.

You need to format your drive. If you are on the latest firmware (2.0.5) this can be done from your MPC X. Taken from the release notes:

Format a drive - You can now use the MPC Live/X to reformat your storage devices. From the Browser, Places section select the drive and hold Shift to reveal the additional f-keys and then select ‘Format Drive’. This will remove any partitions your drive currently has and reformat the entire drive to ExFAT - a format which is compatible with Windows, OSX, and Linux operating systems. Note : uninitialised drives and drives which do not have a filesystem are currently not recognised by the MPC and as such, cannot be formatted.

Hi Starmanwarz,

Thank you for the warm welcome! Looking forward to becoming an active member.

The mpc x has 2.0.3 installed however the ssd drive is brand new so therefor looking at the info you have supplied am I correct in saying it will not be able to format it even if I upgrade the firmware to 2.0.5?

The wifi tab on the unit says something along the lines of "this feature is not currently available" so I take it firmware has to be updated by USB stick or can it be done from the computer via the USB lead?

Thanks for your swift reply by the way!

I strongly suggest you to update to 2.0.5, it offers many new features and you will be able to format your SSD once you do so. Download the firmware from Akai's website and follow the instructions or watch this video

Since you have 2.0 installed and it doesn't show up, it could be a common issue of a new drive not showing up after installation, in that case follow this guide:

Ok great I've found the firmware so I'll do that now thank you so much for your help hopefully it will be smooth sailing from here.

Where do I access all the free sounds instruments that I saw are released on a monthly basis?

Ok firmware updated but I cannot see the drive from within the browser 'places' tab . It shows internal or 'mpc documents ' only? Is this because the drive is brand new and not initialised?

Ok thanks for all the help with this it's all done and working.

Now I have a nice 500gb of extra storage :-D

It should have been easier than it was but for some reason one of the sata ports on my pc motherboard was causing all sorts of issues with the formatting of the drive , it kept giving me blue screen of death and constantly crashing but switche the sata port and bang it was a breeze.

I've transferred some extra drum kits over to the new drive .

I am very impressed with this machine last night I got to grips with how to change the key group program to map instruments across the keyboard and also learnt how to automatically do all the different chords from a single pad press . I'm looking forward to the future!

You can format the drive when it's connected to the mpc in controller mode. Though windows doesn't see the drive you just do it by right clicking my computer and selecting manage. Then select disk management and it will detect it etc

Prior to the later firmwares, you could only format an ssd in another computer , so technically bass monster is not totally incorrect. I think at the time when that post was made, you could only format in another computer. You are quoting old posts...

That said, ive been able to format the ssd in the live (didnt do it on the x but they are the same) whilst connected to the computer but NOT running the mpc software. The drive showed up in the list under “my computer” (im a windows user).
