LOL!!! That's funny!!!! Akai OS 1.6 is actually 1.06. Good one man.
I got rid of the mpc 4000; done deal for 2050.00.
I bought an oxygen 8 and the akai mpd 16.
Smokin!!!!!!!! Holy Ish!!! I made some of my own mpc groove templates for cubase but I barely use them.
Using it with Cubase, Halion; LM4.
Oh and BTW the Z8 sampler will be virtual by next month (vst-i and audio unit) I got wind of this a few months ago and once i heard it was completed and set for release next month I had to get top dollar for the mpc 4000 b4 things really took a nosedive. The mpd 16 with the virtual z8; damn it's gonna be ill; used in conjunction with oxygen 8 (with the 8 knobs for the q-filter) It's a tough game for hardware man. That magic groove they say the mpc 60, 3000, 4000 have is already on groove templates for Cubase. Call the Virtual z8 up ans a vsti I'll use the mpd 16 (as i am already using with halion and lm4mkII) use the groove templates and control the filters on the oxygen. I'm controlling 4 Warldorf filters via the knobs; it's crazy. This is the real deal man.
It was great owning the 4000; but with the arrival of the mac g5 64 bit computing at dual 2ghz and 1ghz frontside bus with 8 gigabytes of ram capacity and soon the AMD 64 with similar specs you can do a whole lot more on those than the mpc 4000; rolands latest bite of the mpc; a motif, Triton studio and emu's best sampler all in one and it still can't compete with the raw power of 64 bit computing whilst still being ompatible with 32 bit apps; it's crazy. And even if there's not 64 bit software or hardware present you'll still benefit from the fronstide bus which is blinding.
Again; there's a reason akai is going virtual man; hardware just isn't competing with software. They can make just as much money selling software versions of the vz8 and can you imagine if roger linn makes a virtual mpc? It's right around the corner; believe me!

Peace

Damixx I seriously hope you are right that some day a virtual MPC will be created based apon the 4k ect... Your new set up is ill no question, but still it's not an MPC and it won't run like an MPC. I build tracks on an MPC better than on the soft sequencers. I like the feel of the hardware and the pattern based sequencing. I don't like all the little issues that come up because the hardware is barely upgradable and by no means future proof. But until somebody can emulate very closely how I work with mpcs on a lap top or G5 than I am sticking with the hardware cos that is how I learned and it's comfortable. peace and let us know how the 2 systems stack up. I have an extra pc that would interesting to set up similarly to how you've done it.

I'll give it to you straight; I'm not enjoying sequencing on the pc or mac.

I only miss the mpc 4000 because of the sequencer. The groove templates do not accuratley represent what can be accomplished quickly using mpc hardware. It can be accomplished if you sit there shifting notes back and forth (you lose your creative spark when the extra work is being done) it's not instantaneous. That's my only beef.
However; Halion and the lm4 mkII do beat the mpc 4000 on the sampling end; hands down with the mpd 16. So do the vst effects. The minus with the mpd 16 is that with the current os; you can only switch between two pad banks; I hope it's not a hardware issue. So my workaround is building my kitts and then seperating them according to midi channel. for 64 sounds and 4 padbanks I split the kitt in two; the first 32 sound to channel 1 (switch banks on the mpd 16) and the second 32 sounds on midi channel 2........... and so on.
Gigastudio 160; OMG it's scary when used with oxygen 8 and the mpd 16.

In fact Gigastudio 160 will be put into it's own pc with a gigabyte motherboard and nvidia chipset ultra 400 with an amd 2800+xp processor and two serial ata drives from Seagate (120gb each) and 2GB of pc 2700 ddram. all this for under 700. Then I will use this as my standalone end all be all sampler until the virtual z8 comes along.

I guess I have to tinker around some more with the sequencer settings; hoping to nail down that magic groove (Eating my slice of humble pie for my previous remarks about the magic mpc groove)
Other than that; I am happy. It's the sequencer in the mpc series that seperates it from software sequencer/sampler setups. Other than that; the mpc 4000 is history. That groove factor will be worked out.

whats up with virtual z8 . will it have a mpc like sequencer and what will u need to plug things into , will it work with pro tools?

the 4000 is bangin , can't understand why u gave up
