I wish Akai had a beta forum with suggestions that you can thumb up.
That can work very well.

I'm not in front of my mpc right now but if I recall correctly you can do it like this...

-Go to sample edit page and select your sample

-return to the main page

-Press the bottom row (program section ) pencil icon

-Select save sample

It should save that sample you selected even if it has never been assigned to any program

Yes, confirmed - seems the 'save current sample' saves the most recently accessed sample - as long as you don't hit any pad in the meantime, this will save the last sample you accessed in SAMPLE EDIT. Good spot. Convoluted though, Akai definitely need to add a disk icon to the sample edit top bar.

EDIT: Seems buggy and not always predictable. I assigned a couple of samples to multiple layers on various pads, loaded an additional sample into memory that wasn't assigned anywhere and tried a few times switching between SAMPLE EDIT and MAIN and sometimes the 'save' screen wouldn't even appear (upon hitting 'save current sample' I was just instantly returned to MAIN). Sometimes it does save the 'sample edit' assessed sample, but sometimes it instead chooses the last one accessed from hitting a pad even though I went to sample edit in the interim. I now remember why I lost interest in beta testing, investigating bugs takes up far too much time.
