Pre-Production Set-up... What do you think?

Here's everything in my pre-production studio. I would appreciate recommendations or suggestions for upgrades or needs.

-2 Technic 1200 M3D's w/ Vestax Pro II 05 Mixer
-Vinyl for sounds
-MPC 2000XL with internal zip and external 250 meg scsi zip
-Compaq 5BW 250 Computer using in conjunction with Cool Edit Pro 2.0
-Yamaha DJ II- I don't use this thing at all. I might sample some of it's hi hats and claps and freak it in the MPC.

I mean that's basically all I have. Here's what I had in mind of getting for my set-up. I really want some keyboard sounds. I sample all of the time. I like the keys to. I thought about a Korg Trition LE? Suggestions?? Thanks in advance.

triton is cool, but maybe a pair of studio monitor speakers for now would be a better step.

The DJX-II sounds do blow-ass. I'll agree with you there. Get a Motif if you've got the scratch, otherwise, it sounds like you need a better comp, and recording program...

Triton is a blank canvas just like every other sampler. YOU paint the picture.
Are canvas' overused? No, You need them to paint pictures, YOUR version of how music makes you feel inside and out, YOUR version of audio bliss. Some people just don't have good vision and tend to use only primary colors :read: the same default sounds: over and over again withou blending colors and experimenting. The equipment is not over used (what about the breath tube that ZAP and ROGER used - no one EVER said that was over used) it's the tired azz producers that are lazy and don't do enough experimenting to portray new pictures when presented to the public. So you end up seeing the SAME picture ALL the time and now you are tired of the colors, but the canvas always starts out blank, it's what you do with it.

Canvas is the gear.
Colors are samples.

The rest is up to you my friend.

I'm in the market for a new keyboard also. From what I've reviewed, you do not want to go with the Triton Le. If you're going to go Triton get a Triton Extreme or Triton Studio. I've heard that the Le isn't the best keyboard to get, especially as a starter keyboard. I know the price is convincing but the sound won't do you any good. I've spend hours on the big 3 keyboards (Triton, Motif, Fantom) and in my opinion that Fantom is powerful. However the Motif's sounds are so clean. I'm inbetween those two as far as a keyboard goes. You dont need over 61 keys and you want to get a starting keyboard with sounds that fit YOU. You can always get expansion cards and sound modules.

Best advice is to test a lot of keyboards and go with the one that you gravitate towards. It's working for me, so it's bound to work for you. That's my $.02

E-mu PK6 is my first digital synth and does the job for me! It has the guts of a PROTEUS sampler with the added benefit of a 5 octave board, 4 layer sounds, 16 rotary midi controllers and 4 outputs. Has standard 'bread and butter' soundset, but I threw in a Pure Phatt Rom into an expansion slot (same sounds as Mo Phatt module) and Im good to go!

Used in multi (16 channel) mode the PK6 sounds can be used to produce 16 track sequences directly from the MPC. No need for a computer!

These boards are relatively cheap compared to Tritons (£150-250). The various expansion roms are always on eBay and each adds approx 512 tweakable sounds to your arsenal!

With the cash you could save, consider getting a mixer or some monitors as suggested already.

True! I don't understand how people can say a sound is overused. Look at the TR-808.. It's all about how you use the sounds. I can any sound and make a synth out of it.. even a hi hat, but if all your using are pre-sets, then sure, anyone will get tired of the way it sounds, but as long as you have imagination (and effects/samplers/filters :) ) you can take anything, anywhere you mind desires.
ps.. words are overused.. be nice if we stoped calling each other n.ggaz & b.tches..just a thought. got side-tracked, lets stay on the topic. :)
