Am i mad, but using key groups on the MpC live can you not select a pad range
i.e i want sample 1 to play on 'Bank A pads 1-16' Sample 2 on 'Bank B pads 17 - 33'
etc etc?

I can do it by Note range but its awful workflow when you accidentally select a note in another keygroup and it automatically jumps to that key group????
Plus not everyone wants to do it by Note..

A keygroup program is a 'musical' program, the pads are chromatically assigned to specific musical notes starting note C-2 on pad A01, up to G8 on pad H16. This is how sampler instrument programs have been made since the year dot. If you load up a Kontakt instrument it will be the same. If you attach a MIDI synth keyboard it will be the same. The program works as fully intended.

If you want to create a program that doesn't do it 'by note', use a DRUM program and manually configure the SEMI values on each pad accordingly.

What type of sample are you trying to map across your pads?

I understand that,

For instance if you have a sample from a record and you want to play two parts of it, i duplicate the sample and give it a different starting point. Make a key group with 2 groups, add the one sample to KG1 and the second to Kg2
I don't wish to map the whole key range just 16 pads fine.

Can you not just select the pad range you want to use sample 1 or 2 on? Similar to 16 Level?

Its a simple method that has been on most DAW software since i can remember. Selecting the Key range especially when it jumps from Kg1 Kg2 etc when you accidentally move into either range seems very combersome. Selecting the range with pads makes more sense - Press pad 1 and make it c-1. I'm not sure if any of these are possible the reason I'm asking?

You can set the key range for each keygroup in PROGRAM EDIT > MASTER, but not by pad. If you do want keygroup 1 to effectively cover bank A, you can set keygroup 1 to cover notes C-2 to Eb-1. This would effectively map the sample from pads A01 to A16. You'll also need to set a suitable root note for that sample otherwise the base tuning will be off - this may not necessarily be the actual true root note, you'll want to pick a root note that suits the note range you are asking the MPC to use, somewhere in the middle of the pad note range, say G-2, do this in SAMPLE EDIT.

Doing the above will map your sample in semitone steps across bank A. Repeat for E-1 to G0 for bank B.

But keygroup programs are all about notes, not pads, I might be misunderstanding exactly what you are trying to achieve, but if you are using keygroups to pitch samples across a range then you really need to forget about 'pad banks' as are they are not really relevant, for keygroup programs they are more like 'octave' buttons on a keyboard. Set your key ranges by note, make sure you set a suitable root note on your sample, and you will get the same experience as you would on any other sampler mapping notes across a keyboard.

Or use DRUM programs with the SEMI value increased by +/-1, you could create a template program with the tunings pre-mapped

Yes this is pretty much what i've done to achieve it.

I've just tried the other method you suggested in your previous message, to assign the sample to each pad and nudge each one up a semi tone which is also another way to do it.

"You can set the key range for each keygroup in PROGRAM EDIT > MASTER, but not by pad"

Its not that i can't do it its the way it does it i suppose, the workflow is clunky, it would be a lot quicker if you could select the range of each key group by pad and then select the root note. Anyway i guess you can't.

Thanks for the help

It would also be nice to select ranges with an external keyboard, ie select low key on the live then press a key on the keyboard and repeat for the high. Anyone who's used Ensoniq samplers will be familiar with the method.
This could also work for the pads.

Exactly the method i mean, and of course if you can do it with an ext keyboard the same logic applies to the pads. I get that key groups are musical programs but i'm still faffing around with were one KG ends and the next begins, it slows down the whole workflow for me.
