How can you put the Akai content on there, very few of them allow you to change the install directory. Are you using those symbolic links or something like that?

I have 4TB for my lappy and going bigger. Laptop is a computer its just in a laptop form. And l do music on my joint

Danoc, there is a type of hierarchy when it comes to how hard drive brands and series are graded. So for storage, Western Digital RED series drives are the ones to have for NAS related stuff. They have a different firmware configuration for how the drives seek, when they go idle, and have a 256 MB cache on them, which still enables them to have fast and sometimes faster read/re-writes than older 7200RPM drives even tho these ones are set at 5900.

The cheaper WD drives are the WD Green, the regular ones are the WD Blue, they have enterprise ones such as the WD RED GOLD and then the WD RED which is above consumer grade with extended warranty and very low failure rates, run cool and are quiet. You may or may not notice that with some hard drives, you will hear them ramping up or a clicking sound here and there. The drives that click a lot are due to them parking their read head (think of it like a tone arm on a turn table) on the platter which is awful because they can get stuck, causing physical damage to the platter itself and causing a bad sector. the WD red NAS drives are configured differently to not do that sort of sh*t.

Cheaper drives that have higher failure rates are those 4TB Seagate drives, which is why they're always cheaper and are fine if you need a junk drive for downloading movies and don't care if the sh*t dies on you. There are some newer higher end Seagate drives that offer 5 year warranty and free data recovery if the drive dies, but you're looking like $500 per drive for that. So it could be worth it depending on the importance of data you're handling.

What is important to note for you or anyone else reading this is -- You can find enclosures like the ones that Danoc have pictured, but those are for the most part running in JBOD mode and do not have any sort of data retention or protection enabled. It's just an external enclosure to have a grip of disks connected. When you want to get more serious about it, you'll have to explore raid setups to determine what is the best for your needs such as a RAID mirror and parity drive, so if one hard drive dies on you, you can pull it out, replace it with a new one and it will rebuild the mirror where you didn't lose shit. I'll keep it simple for now as I 'm not even sure most people will read what I'm writing anyway.

My apologies for the long post people. If anyone is all that interested, we can make a separate topic to discuss drives and backups as it's a topic that is glossed over on this forum.

So the drive you showed me runs at 5900?

Yeah l know about the raid.

What's up with these hybrid SSD drives? They are not straight up SSD.? The SSD have no moving parts which dope as you explained about clicking and the needle on the plate disk. Studied that way back in school. That's why the SSD is so dope there are no moving parts.

Yes but keep in mind, this is today technology so a 5900 rpm drive with 256 megabyte cache will run just as fast or faster than an older age 7200 rpm drive with 32 megabyte cache. It does it with less power as well, so that means it will also generate less heat as well which in return also preserves the platters for many years longer too.

What kind of hard drives do you have in that enclosure of yours?

Hybrid ssd drives are drives that will have a set partition of nand memory for caching of files the drive sees you often use (the firmware on the drive handles this), and the rest of the data is stored on the mechanical part of the drive. They mainly benefit people who use the ssd side for their operating system, and the rest of the drive for larger / archival forms of data.

For anyone else reading or confused - if you're planning on buying a 2.5" drive for your MPC, I would suggest just going SSD and not bothering with hybrid as any moving parts in a piece of hardware that you often move around will increase the chances of drive failure or data loss.

That's what I was looking for, I need that power to run my Eastwest Instruments and nothing less. So not only is it cheaper but it wont over heat, and probably quiet also and that's what I need. I will buy what you said.

What I have in my old enclosures are the WD 7200 rpm 32 cache and Hitachi 7200 rpm they are both 2TB. My new ones there are nothing in those, I have a 4TB that I tried just to see if it worked in the new one and that's WD, I had that for a while. I will just put stuff on it and not run it, it will be, say like my hold bank for sounds and music. But the new one I bought, I will use as back ups to the back ups LOL

That's why I went with eSata drives because of the fast transportation of it. I know Thunderbolt is like 20Gbps, now is that thunderbolt for Mac only or any machine? I know that's the new fastest out. they are coming out with 3.1 which will do 10Gbps. And Thunderbolt 2 is coming, its not faster than the original it just helps with you not having to stack two Thunderbolts all you have to do now is buy the thunderbolt 2.

So you just basically saved me with that, that's why I ask questions, I fell off the knowing those hard drives wagon, I am in the lab so much.

I'm waiting on a multiple m.2 sata external ssd enclosure. Everything they have now are single like the one in this picture. By the end of 2018, there will be no more spinning HD's in the studio.

Keep in mind that using a high end 7200 RPM drive is still relevant. I would still prefer to use one of those in a smaller size, like a 1tb one where it has less platters to have to seek through vs these 4-8tb ones that have more platters and different compression technologies. It kind of sets it apart from using a drive meant for mainly backup and archival data vs one that is meant for constant read and writes. I may change my mind later on as I honestly do not use WD RED or NAS focused drives for my DAW related stuff. I relegate them to storing the grips of VST and large stem exports and use smaller 7200rpm drives for my main sh*t.

Yeah that is what I mean, using the newer 4-8tb lower RPM drives as a storage pool is the smarter way to go about it. As far as I am aware, that enclosure you got does not have any raid functions right? It's just an eSATA enclosure.

Thing is, Thunderbolt will never increase the actual throughput beyond what the hard drive specification is. But with that being said, if you are looking to take things to another level then I would suggest getting a m2 drive, and if you don't have an m2 port on your motherboard, get a pci-e to m2 adapter for $20 which would out perform any SATA based SSD. I've tried loading 8GB Kontakt instruments that load near instantly. There are also PCIE to Thunderbolt enclosures that are available although buying them from MAC type of retailers end up charging you a grip for them. You would end up getting far better read/write throughput than if you had a normal SATA SSD drive to Thunderbolt although honestly, I'm not sure if you would notice the difference in real world application vs sitting there doing benchmarks all day.

I was going to get a Asus Hyper M.2 X16 Pcie Card, however I'm waiting for the prices on the M2 cards to drop. I'm planning on building a VSTi instrument box.
