how does over dub work?

ok i just got my mpc 2000xl today and im still learning how to use it... soo ive been tryna make drum patterns with the drum sounds that it came with. i was going through the manual and im trying to record a loop how does the over dub button work cause when i press REC and OVER DUB together the NOW: field dont even increase... please help me thanks

dont bother with the overdub, Just set the number of bars to what you want, then hold record and press PLAY START and record your shit. If you screw up one or two notes then u can use Overdub, Once youve recorded the loop it automatically plays again with overdub on, by default. if you press stop then hold overdub and press play start. if you **** up in overdub, press stop, then press UNDO SEQUENCE once, then try again, but i wouldnt use overdub if i were you, just press stop and start recording again, make sure you switch to an unused track when recording a new sound or instrument or whatever. If you press record while inthe same track you will lose whats already on it, if you DO do this, then press stop and undo sequence and you will be back to where you were. I dont know How deep the undo's go, Im assuming you can only undo one record.

ive had my mpc for 6 days and i havent read the manual once

Overdub adds to the recording without completely recording over what you have already.

Record will record what you play over what you already have and "erase" whatevers already on the track.

if you look to the right of your bars you'll see how many bars you have. What you can do is either set it to a higher number or go into the edit screen and hit bars.the colum on the left is the start and end of where you want to loop/extend your track. To the right indicates which bar the change will commence after. the number on the bottom right hand side(copies) is how many times you want to copy the section you just looped so to speak. Try playing with 2 and 4 bar drum loops that you composed on your mpc and trust me you'll be beatmaking in no time.

thanks for clearing that up for meee. they must have made a mistake in the manual cause it says hold rec and press over dub to start recording... soooo over dub is just basically recording over the things that u recorded right?

Odub is adding.
Rec is overwrite.
playstart is play from begining.
play is continue.

see another question.. when i press over dub and play it records from the very beginning of the bar where i left off is that how its suppose to be?

When I do odub and play at 07.01.28 it starts me off at 07.01.00. I guess "PLAY" is only to continue when you are ONLY playing.

Bug maybe?

i havent read the manul but this is what ive figured out:

If nothing is playing and you press play it will play from wherever the current position is

if nothing is playing and you press play start it will start from the beginning and play

if you press record and press play it will recrd from current position ( i think )

If you pres record and press play start it will record from begginging

if you press overdub and play start it will overdub from begging

if you press overdub and play it will overdub from current position

if you press Overdub and play while a sequence is playing, the metronome wlil instantly come in and the sequence will continue and you can overdub shit

theres nothing wrong with his. its a user problem not a machine problem. its real simple.
REC + PLAY START STARTS FROM THE BEGINNING
REC + PLAY STARTS WHERE IT LEFT OFF
PLAY = PLAYIN AT WHATEVER POINT U LEFT IT AT
PLAY START STARTS IT AT THE BEGINNING
