Default note mapping

Hi

I know that there are hopes that the note mapping will improve at some point, in the meantime I'm getting confused about what notes the drum programs respond to (I'm using an old Yamaha drum module as an input device and trying to map notes it sends out to Live).

If I select an empty drum program in a new project, hook up a usb keyboard and hunt the notes, bank A of the pads respond to a really odd/random selection of notes:

C#3 - G3 - D#3 - F3
C3 - B2 - A2 - G2
E2 - D2 - A#2 - G#2
C#2 - C2 - F#2 - A#5

To make it worse, the mapping seems to change when some different programs are loaded! Is this normal? I got a b stock Live and I'm wondering if somehow the mapping has been altered.

Default note mapping for a new DRUM program does not change, pad A01=37, A02=36, A03=38, A04=82....

Third party programs might have custom mappings. My programs tend to run chromatic from 36.

If you want to create custom MIDI mapping, open up the MPC Software on your computer and go to Edit > Program > Note Mapping and configure as needed. Save that program and store it on your standalone disk, load it up each time you need that mapping.

It is standard for midi drum programs

There really should be a way to easily make the settings from the hardware.

I made template project that has the pads set to chromatic. Easily done from the software.

I'm trying to set my Live up with a blank drum prog to route to hardware/software via MIDI (not via the Akai software). I want to map it like the XpressPads default, which mirrors the two vertical rows - so A01 and A04 are both note 36, A02/A03 are note 42, A05/08 are 38, A06/07 are 46, and so on. Looks like the MPC can't be set up to duplicate MIDI note outputs on its pads though. Is that right, or is there a workaround? I'm wondering if setting the duplicate pads (say A03, 04, 07, 08 etc) to trigger the main ones (A01, 02, 05, 06) would work - but this will depend whether the MPC triggers a secondary MIDI note externally or not, or just plays the duplicated pad internally. I'd also wind up with a load of unneeded midi being output but I can set those to dummy notes.

Otherwise, I'm stuck with setting up templates on any instrument I want to use this with, which is pretty annoying.

NB: I have set up some MPC kits to work this way, but to be honest the difference in sensitivity between using those and running into Superior Drummer is huge. I guess this is to do with the amount of layers that Superior uses.

Just to confirm. when you say you "set up some MPC kits to work this way" do you mean that you were able to set duplicate note numbers to different pads?
I also want to do this with a midi program to send out to other programs, or external gear.

No, afraid not. I meant I took some existing MPC drum programs, and moved and copied the samples,without altering the midi notes at all. This gives me standalone kits with the sounds in the right places, but is no good for vsts or hardware. I'm guessing that having more than one pad send out a particular midi note is just not possible on the MPC. Bit of a shame.
