A few tech ?'s

Just a few quick questions that I can't seem to find on the search.

What is the biggest SCSI harddrive that the MPC can handle and is the newest OS 1.14 or did they release a new version when the memory stick option was released. Also, when looking for SCSI harddrives, is there anything in particular that I should know, or are they pretty much all the same except the sizes. Any help her would be great

A 4gb hard-drive is the maximum capacity the 2000/XL can handle. I wish I could tell you scsi 2 or whatever, but I don't remember what I have.. it's the early scsi, not the newer stuff that came out later tho. (damn, that's some horrible advice)

The MPC2k series theoretically can handle about a 26 Gig hard drive. I have personally used a 20 Gig on the XL. It is possible that you could use a larger drive while some of it will be unused, but I have not tried this (the older MPC's could do this, eg. I have a 1Gig in the MPC3000, but it only uses 780 Meg).

I guess I'll ask this here. If I get one these SCSI drives, are they easy to backup? Could I hookup the drive to my pc's scsi interface (provided it's the right type), and backup my songs, programs and .wav samples? Hate to rely on a drive if I cannot back it up...

Yo, PhatC, you theoretically can switch your harddrive between your PC and MPC but it isn't good for your drive and is therefor not reccommended. Disconnecting and reconnecting your drive greatly increases the chance of it crashing. If you want an easy way to back up on a PC just use zip disks to transfer the info back and forth (although I did just burn out my zip drive by saving too many big samples at once). Basically, there isn't too many options but the best one I've seen so far is that you can now upgrade a 2000xl with a memory/smart card slot, and then you can get a card slot on your PC, too, and transfer info that way. There is a new MPC2000xl that comes with the smart card slot, and it costs about $300 more than the non-smart card version, so you're probably looking at about the same cost to do the upgrade.
