No, actually it’s beyond ludicrous. It’s gone plaid.

I believe professionals (as you are always saying you are) refer to a DAW as multitracking software that runs on a pc or Mac. You can’t classify just a sampler with limited music function (or any other digital music specific gear that falls in that category) as a pc or a Mac or other brand of multifunction personal computing.

Now go consult Lovey for a real answer (nice selfie though!)

Wormhelmet: So, Thurston, by your logic, the MPC Live is a DAW then.

Charles Randolph: Yes the MPC LIVE and X would be considered a DAW.

Is it Digital? Check
Does it work with Audio? Check
Is it a Desktop Work Station? Check
Can it record Audio? Check
Can it edit Audio? Check
Can it Copy and Paste Audio? Check
Can it import Audio? Check
Can it export Audio? Check
Can it arrange Audio? Check
Does it have effects? Check
Can you arrange the audio in a song? Check

Do I really have to go on. YES! Because if SKIPPER (Wormhelmet) didn't crash the boat. I would be in the studio, sleeping on my Rupert Neve Designs 5088 Shelford Console. Let's continue.

From Wikipedia:

A digital audio workstation (DAW) is an electronic device or application software used for recording, editing and producing audio files. DAWs come in a wide variety of configurations from a single software program on a laptop, to an integrated stand-alone unit, all the way to a highly complex configuration of numerous components controlled by a central computer. Regardless of configuration, modern DAWs have a central interface that allows the user to alter and mix multiple recordings and tracks into a final produced piece.[]

If that does not describe a MPC Live and MPC X, I don't know what does.

Wormhelmet: Getting a little convoluted as the MPC software on PC will run in a DAW I believe, so you are connecting a DAW to a DAW to run in your DAW?

Charles Randolph: I guess you never heard of REWIRE, been doing that since 98. :WTF:

Wormhelmet: I believe professionals (as you are always saying you are) refer to a DAW as multitracking software that runs on a pc or Mac.

Charles Randolph: A Mac is a PC aka Personal Computer. (Stop regurgitating marketing. ) I think you mean runs on a DELL, ASUS, LENOVO, or MAC. Etc Etc. Nevertheless read the Wikipedia excerpt that I posted above.

I consulted with Lovey and she said, "Put away your MV8000 because you're DAWless. I guess you better learn how to mic pianos, horns, drum-sets, patch outboard gear into an analogue board, compose the music and hire a string section and horn sections and record to 2 inch 24 track Otari MTR90 Mk III."

I'm still lost on this 10k MPC. Not on the idea of a true flagship, but, what can they really do, to make a MPC worth 10k? They could go the 100% standalone route by shoving a computer inside of it that is designed to run MPC2.0 and VSTs, but I mean I built a PC capable of that and shoved it inside of a PS3 (this was a while ago) for under $400. Even going high-end on it (think Ultrabook), would only be a stack maybe 2 more depending on how stupid they got. Slightly higher quality screen at those sizes would only be a little more in cost. They could get stupid on the inputs between quality and quantity I guess, but even at that I don't see how they could pass the 6k wall without just flat out charging more for dumb reasons.

I don't *personally* think a higher end model is needed. I'd think a continued push towards improvements would net better results. Music equipment has a lot of word of mouth, some of us were told they HAD to use certain pieces of equipment. If effort was continually put into improving the existing landscape, and a MK2 was released and a MK3 a couple years after each other with consistent improvements in things like screen resolution, battery life (Live), layouts, built in effect adds, feature sets, etc - they will get to where they would want to go. In the 90s and early oughts it wasn't about having the flagship MPC or even caring about the flagship MPC, it was simply MPC or bust. "Unreall, what are you doing messing around with this Fruity Loops, you need to grab you a MPC 500 at least". "What's a Reason man, get this MPC 1000 duke".In the electronic and hip-hop world, especially right now, no one gives two nickles about flagship. You can watch videos by FACT tv on youtube and some of the other channels with *non bedroom* producers, and they'll sit in a studio filled with 10k+ worth of equipment, and do EVERYTHING using Fruity/Logic/Ableton, a sub-$500 controller, and they MIGHT pull out an 'older' analog synth for a bassline or melody.

Everyone has a different way of working.
It doesn't matter if you use pc or not or mpc or not.
The results matter.
Having said that, Mpc has a good way of working with samples. It's a sampler with advanced features but still a sampler.
No synth engine.
It's not a daw, not a substitute of anything.
If you like working with samples, is a good deal.

In the world of audio 10K is not that much money. Symphonic orchestra musician for the Los Angeles Philharmonic or New York Philharmonic will spend twice that on their instruments. It's all about the build quality, inputs, outputs, software and close attention to detail.

Here is how they get people, they will buy 12 desktop modules for only 500 dollars. However when you add that up, it cost them 6000 dollars. Now what if they put together those 12 desktop modules into one machine, all while keeping the flexibility and the best function of those modules. That would be one beast of a machine.

You stated that In the electronic and hip-hop world, especially right now, no one gives two nickles about flagship. Yes but many of them do not give two nickles about lyrical skill, style, content and musician ship. But that's another story.

You say it doesn't matter what you use, but it does matter. Why do you choose what you use? Is your choice based strictly on price, features, or both? As far as a synth engine, load some sine waves and put it into a key group, add effects and what not and get to tweaking.

As far as the DAW statement:
viewtopic.php?f=48&t=186049&start=150#p1746394

The results matter: I agree.
Mpc has a good way of working with samples: I agree.

We still listen to masterpieces made with devices that were maybe one tenth of what we have now.
Or even less.
Grab a machine and take out the best of it. That's my idea.
Mpc or not Mpc.
I choose Mpc because is fast enough and it sounds good.

Do you have an example of the masterpieces you listen to now?
