Trigger my Roland 101 (ext click) from the MPC Live?

Hi,

I have a Roland SH 01a which has a programmable sequencer which can be triggered by external click. I've seen videos of how people used to trigger SH101's using something like the 808, and using the 16 steps to change the rhythm, but all I have is my MPC Live and I'm wondering if I can do anything close to that using midi...?

I know if I set the MPC to send midi clock, pressing START will trigger the SH01a, but I want to know if I can change the sequence playback.

It should be possible just hook up lets say output 6 from the live to the external clock in,
load up a kit with for tradition a rimshot, create a pattern with that rimshot and send it to output 6, press play.
Now everytime the rimshot hits the sh101a's sequencer should advance 1 step.

This is a great technique for creating polyrhythms with say a 16 step sequence but only 13 rimshots to a bar.

as the MPC is able to create polyritms itself (only in full bars!) you shoudn't have to worry about this ; you can do it all in one sequence with diff. tracks with different Time assignments
maybe you can also use the internal step sequencer of the MPC for this (and then assign a rimshot sound as explained above)

Thanks Moho, that works great! I do have a slight issue though, which is that for some reason the tone from the SH01a hangs when I stop playing. Any idea why that might be?

Are you talking about making tracks different lengths, or is there a way of automating it that I missed...?

AFAIK this is normal, the sequencer doesn't know when the next trigger / note is coming so it holds it till a new one is received,
unfortunately when you press stop it holds the note waiting for a new one.
The way round this is to have no sustain and just set your decay to taste.

My mistake should have said polymeter not polyrhythm
The mpc can also do this with a lot of copy and pasting but its not as much fun.
