The motherboard they use inside the Live did come with a 4GB RAM version, but the motherboard series itself was discontinued years ago, we still don't know how they sourced (or continue to source) the current stock. Unfortunately since inMusic took over, Akai are always a few steps behind with the tech, so I wouldn't hold your breath when it comes to stuff like this.

Ultimately the board they used for the Live was already outdated tech when it was released, so by the time they come out with an MPC with 4GB of RAM everyone will probably be looking for 8GB minimum. Disk streaming will help offset that though. But the CPU will probably start to struggle with all the new features. The solution is to make that leap to using the very latest tech - it's not like Akai don't charge through the teeth for these machines, so I'm sure the margins can cope.

Danoc wrote:8GB? Try 16 GB. Dudes talking about vsts etc you need more than 8GB.

Definitely would like like upgradeable ram also.
More RAM! At least 16GB. I assume you'd get more bang from an MPC, but my MBP has 16GB and I couldn't due with much less.

I think MPC will be the 1st to a true DAW in a box, but I'm guessing they're 3 years out. I just hope it's not limited to the flagship X-sized model.

The question is, What does the MPC do better than anything other piece of gear? Once they answer that question. Then they build their flagship around that. Currently, the MPC does not have a main focus, it's all over the place, because they want it to be a general purpose machine.

Multi Track Recorder
Audio interface
Hardware Midi Sequencer
Software Controller
Sampling Drum Machine
Musical Instrument
Effects Processor
etc

Akai Pro needs to say, the MPC is the best (INSERT NAME) and then go all out, dedicating every spec of power to creating that machine. But at this point, the MPC would be something like an All In One Printer. It a Printer, Fax, Scanner, Copier. It can do them all, but can't do one the best.

I agree, it's the classic jack-of-all-trades.

The vast array of chopping options make the MPC pretty unique, but the algorightm they use now is actually a backwards step in some respects compared to the one on the MPC1000/2500, as the new algorithm has removed what I consider to be the essential feature of any chop functionality, the adjustable 'additive' decay at the end, just like Recycle adds. Without this, you get all manner of clicks at the end of chops, and those chops suffer when used in slower beats as they quickly sound 'choppy'. Patch phrase loops now sound terrible when slowed down.

It's bread and butter stuff like that that needs sorting, not fancy new features IMO.

I agree....much of this should've been handled in R&D. All they have to do is incorporate what made the PAST MPCs great and improve on that legacy. I think that's why they went back to the Standalone, to try and recapture that greatness. Personally, I would've keep going forward with the controller and software side.

Make the most Kick Ass controller they could make and put the attention on their Software DAW. The current SOC is just not powerful enough, to handle what they are trying to do with the software. That's why standalone is a neutered version of Akai Software 2.0 that runs on a desktop.

This hypothetical MPC with more ram and Vsts . would l buy into it ? Certainly not.

In January or February 2011 lm getting a supa PC its going to be blown out. Way cheaper than a MPC "New One". Im not putting my hopes in Akai no more. There's no need to get hyped about another MPC then another one one after that and so on. My computer and what l have in it is really the center of my stu because lm ITB.

Funny, I wasn't thinking about "next gen" MPCs until I got the Live and the option to create away from the CPU. That was last week. I hope to be thinking about it much less in 6 months or however long it takes for me to sample enough kits & instruments into this Live to create on the go.

But I imagine having a hard time staying away from this theoretical DAW-in-a-box, depending on cost & size. For as long as I stayed away from VSTs, I have a hard time without them now.

Seriously, How long will the Live/X last if the tech is outdated? Will our machines be done for in 2 years or less??

If Akai keeps the updates coming for these machines they won't become out dated. If they stop updating next year its a wrap. I will keep using my MPC for drums that's it. DAWs will improve they have no choice. That's why l kept my DAWs.

Some fool tried to make it seem because l only ue 30% of my Live that some how lm lacking? He sounded stupid. For one a year earlier l said l will only use the MPC Live for drums cause l have two DAWs. I wasn't going to do entire tracks on the live and you only get 8 audio tracks no vsts etc.
So l don't depend on Akai l have to make adequate decisions for myself based on the digital realm weather.

if they had properly designed their own "mainboard" we could have seen RAM Sockets an stuff and even digital IO, but since they bought the whole thing from the shelf, the OS share thes RAM with the samples. So if they add a feature we get less RAM for samples and stuff. I think the whole thing isnt really worth it. sad.

When they first sat diwn at the table they should of made it so you can expand the ram at least to 128gig ram.

I dont see how people are thinking vsts can go on these machines. They will have to build another MPC just to do this and more. I wouldn't buy into that.

I agree. And I know everyone wants different things, and I respect them all, however, MPCs as a DAW? I’d rather just use a DAW. With the way these folks abandon their hardware in its infancy, it would be a mess. Developing and maintaining a DAW is a commitment of YEARS of effort. Something Akai hasn’t shown to have over the last 5 MPCs. 2.x and they’re onto something else. Not nearly enough time and effort to develop a DAW. Heck the leading DAWs have been around for almost 20 years, are 10 versions in, probably 30 releases in, and are STILL fixing bugs and making improvements. Akai having that level of commitment? :hmmm:
