Support and discussion for all of Akai’s modern standalone MPCs including the MPC X / X SE, MPC Live 1, 2 & 3, MPC One / One+, MPC Key 37/61.

It seems that the long term plans for akai are to augment already developed daws. I hardly ever use the akai software but it does seem to be a good representation on what the standalone unit can do.

I use ableton for just about everything else, but it’s more breaking down samples from me just doing keyboard playing and finalizing my mixes. Samples exported to live and then back again when I want to finish my mix.

I use the live to write and process my samples pretty easily with hardware. Slowly learning to get more a finished product with the live and some hardware.

From my POV they have had this plan for while, they moved into the territory with the ren the original line of ableton controllers, and finally push 1. Something got messed up in there and no one knows the terms of the contract but I think it had to do something with a standalone unit. I think the live and x are conprimises to some thing they had in the works with ableton. I also imagine in music brands got its greed on and thought they could do the same with the MPC Software.

I think they will stick with the Mpc and vip software beyond 3.0 but expect a lot of off shoot products.

Maybe a keyboard with a differnt computer specs running the same exact os as the live and x. Maybe limited integration with fruity loops and reason. And most importantly they will start moving into the 500-800 dollar market awith more capable machines. Think the recent electron line, moog grand mother, anything to just be a little bit better than the being a behringer unit...

The music gear industry is changing in a wierd way.

Let’s see a modern system based around the Mpc 4000 concept and line up they offered. Z4/8, Mfc filter. That should have been the benchmark for nukai not and updated 1000-2500-5000 line up with. The slow morph into ableton controllers.

LOL  Man you hit it on the head. Someone said Akai has 2 teams one worked on the fire and other on the new MPCs.

Im like yeah right the way they are moving shows only one team.they are not that dedicated.

I dont see how people are thinking vsts can go on these machines. They will have to build another MPC just to do this and more. I wouldn't buy into that.

[quote"ontherun"]if they had properly designed their own "mainboard" we could have seen RAM Sockets an stuff and even digital IO, but since they bought the whole thing from the shelf, the OS share thes RAM with the samples. So if they add a feature we get less RAM for samples and stuff. I think the whole thing isnt really worth it. sad.

I agree. And I know everyone wants different things, and I respect them all, however, MPCs as a DAW? I’d rather just use a DAW. With the way these folks abandon their hardware in its infancy, it would be a mess. Developing and maintaining a DAW is a commitment of YEARS of effort. Something Akai hasn’t shown to have over the last 5 MPCs. 2.x and they’re onto something else. Not nearly enough time and effort to develop a DAW. Heck the leading DAWs have been around for almost 20 years, are 10 versions in, probably 30 releases in, and are STILL fixing bugs and making improvements. Akai having that level of commitment? :hmmm:

I agree.

MPC should always be an MPC. However, I always felt that the 4k was that DAW in a box.

Instead of 8 audio tracks for the sequences, Akai should have moved that to Song Mode so sequences and audio tracks can blend nicer when creating a full track. These things should've came with 100GB. I had machines with 40GB standard back in 2006.

I've always felt that for something to be a centerpiece of a studio or setup. It needed to be the one piece that everything in the studio connected into and out of. It seemed that the natural progression for the MPC was to improve as a mixer/audio interface/control surface.

External hardware needs MIDI and Audio Mixer
Computers needs Audio Interface and Control Surface

The MPC X actually fits that mold, but it lacks the audio inputs of a mixer and the ability to functions as a Standalone and Controller at the same time. A combination of MPC 4000 and the DPS24 with more controller surface functionality, would be ideal as a Flagship.

MPC software - I'd be surprised if they weren't working on fleshing this out into a full DAW. I won't claim to know how close it already is as all DAWs excel in different areas, but it seems too close to not bring it home.

MPC hardware - I'd suspect a new round of machines would be necessary due to RAM & licensing needs. If this ever happens, I hope "necessary" elements are not limited to the flagship model. The differences should be similar to the current set... I/O, buttons, knobs, levers, etc. The Live version should only differ in HOW things are accomplished. I'm personally happy to rely on my audio interface & software for the same things as I do along side my DAW.

I know they're behind Native Instruments in this regard, but they have some things in place to create an ecosystem. The software is ahead of NI's IMO. The pad & keyboard controllers are similar. Akai is less involved with VSTs, but have affiliations. I'm surprised they instead choose to supplement others.

What is the center piece of your studio/setup? You, Your speakers, and _____ ?

I'm trying to make it MPC Live & MPC 2.2, coming from Logic Pro X. The goal is to create exclusively in/on MPC & mix in Logic.

I considered Maschine MK3 & its software, especially since I use a lot of Native Instrument VSTs. Ultimately I was more attracted to the MPC.

It seems like what is really need is an os for computers be it mac or PC that turns it into a SOLELY daw based dedicated machine. Completely optimized for what we use these machines for. There is no way any company is going to be able keep up with the ever changing developments in tech for their standalone hardware.

CharlesRandolph wrote:The question is, What does the MPC do better than anything other piece of gear? Once they answer that question. Then they build their flagship around that. Currently, the MPC does not have a main focus, it's all over the place, because they want it to be a general purpose machine.

Multi Track Recorder
Audio interface
Hardware Midi Sequencer
Software Controller
Sampling Drum Machine
Musical Instrument
Effects Processor
etc

Akai Pro needs to say, the MPC is the best (INSERT NAME) and then go all out, dedicating every spec of power to creating that machine. But at this point, the MPC would be something like an All In One Printer. It a Printer, Fax, Scanner, Copier. It can do them all, but can't do one the best.

Seems pretty obvious to me:

Sampling Musical instrument
Sampling drum machine
Hardware sequencer.

Not necessarily in that order of priority, imo all 3 are equally important.
That’s what the MPCs were always about no?

It would seem that way, however the way Akai Pro developed this machine, there are to many features and none of them stand out, compared to other samplers on the market. Up until the MPC 4000 we knew what the MPC was, but once they added sounds and 8 track recorder. It became the Akai MV8800 with out the VGA/Mouse Expansion
