Turning function button backlights on/off

Hey, everybody!
I just got a used MPC Live from Guitar Center, and the function buttons don't have any backlighting. I checked the manual, but I'm not seeing a way to cycle those on or off. Does anybody know any tricks for that, or should this unit be returned?

Damn, as I'm digging into issues other folks are having, the Live is seeming kinda fragile!

You copped as used one, and the salesman didn't inform you that backlights weren't supposed to be like that.

Sure, but I can buy an MPC from 1999 and not have an issue. I know there's some luck of the draw, but seeing multiple posts from people having to send their MPC Live to the factory for internal storage issues, I have concerns.
