most people who rely on sample/loop packs are hobbists and prob not gonna actually release anything, when they do will find out the hard way. i think if your using a sampler you gotta be making your own content to some extent. im totally against splice being added into the mpc as there as so many unfinsihed things and bugs that need fixing first and have never bought a loop pack and dont intend to, no more cheap ass plug in synths either, that is unless the pictures of the tubes are more realistic :vomit:

Actually lots of PROS use sample and loop packs. My point is that you have companies who sell sample/loop packs. Who tell users not to use them as a building block for their sample/loop packs. Yet, those same companies do that.

Regarding the point about this guy KSHMR packaging someone’s loop / sample pack in their own (or too close to it), yeah, clearly not good. It actually reminds me of the days when people were just looping up record samples without chopping or processing it. Just a straight rip and loop.

Regarding the points about whether loop / sample packs are bad for creativity, heck yeah for some people it will be. For others, hearing a rhodes phrase, or a bass phrase can be inspirational. It’s just the differences in how people work. Just like how some people can be inspired by a sample on a record. Or some people can be inspired by a synth patch. Or some people get their inspiration from creating a new sound. But like Charles said, lots of pros making a LOT of money producing songs use sample / loop packs. I’ve sat in studios listening to songs built around a phrase from a sample / loop pack and months later hear it released and on the radio.

Synths, records, drum breaks, sample libraries... they’re all just tools. And my advice from my humble production experience, use them or not, but embrace them all. Get your creative inspiration from wherever it comes from. It. Doesn’t. Matter. Get inspired, and get this music released people. Sample libraries kill your creativity? You’re right. Sampling records kills your creativity? You’re right. Synths kill your creativity? You’re right. For YOU, you’re right. But that doesn’t make the others wrong or less professional. But just like records and synths, if you’re gonna buy sample libraries, be careful what yiou’re buying / using. Splice, from what i hear, is a playground for people selling other people’s stuff.

And Yoda, I agree - I’d much rather see other things fixed than having this Splice integration.

I try to avoid loop packs and downloaded clips.
It's the death of creativity for me.
We have a drum machine, synths, keyroups, I have microphones and digital recorder, so why not making your own clips instead of using someone else ideas?
Same. I haven't even downloaded the content included with my Live; I really just want the "instruments". It's also part of the reason that when I do sample, I tend to make chromatic instruments instead of chopping phrases, though some creative arrangement of chops is the shit. I'd bet 90% of my favorite joints were made this way.

I never understood the sense of copyright on the electronic music of today.
And anyway I think that sites or brands who sell ready made clips should not claim any copyright.
When folks get creative, I have no problems with it. But the sounds are selected for a reason. And if the original owner can recognize the sample, there wasn't enough manipulation to make it the producers own.

This is where people better learn how to program etc. I have no issue with that. I spent years on my craft and don't have to worry.

I agree, but many people want to be spoon fed and have things instantly. The thing about those kind of sites are they are suppose to eliminate copyright issues.
I'm not very familiar, but I believe some are only royalty free for small market releases. I remember a post here or else where pointing out some fine print to that regard.

The sample pack model has been flawed for a long time. When I worked out of a lot of studios. I would talk to the other engineers, producer, musicians and we would swap sounds all day long.

If I had 2 hour of time left out of my block. Musicians would setup and we would record sounds. Then give the all the sounds to each as payment. None of this lease sounds or pay tokens for sounds. Is this what we have been reduced too.

Everyone trying to make money off of music, but they not making any music. It's like everyone wants to be paid by doing the least amount of work, with the least amount of effort. The moment musician start feeding off of each other, is the moment the music dies and the SUITS win.

Don't get me wrong, I'm about making money. But I'm also about giving more back to the ART, then I take from it. These companies need to stop treating the creators of music, like the consumer of music. I want TOOLS not marketing plans and promotions campaigns. If they make the best tools, I'll buy the gear.
