We'll have to wait an see then.

This confusion wouldn't happen if people stick to topic/subject.

I am guilty.

Yes you are right.
Things are getting a bit confused because of Akai moves.
Mpc Live, Mpc X, Apc, software or standalone or controller....aargh
Anyway my question was: does anyone know if disc streaming is usually intended only for internal drive or does it also work with external usb drives?
Not only for Mpc, I mean for any device using disk streaming

You guys sent me down so many rabbit holes trying to defend myself because I mentioned this is the solution I haven't even had time to mention that.

I would not even be surprised if the obvious software update that will happen when this APC is released includes disc streaming.

AFA ports allocated for disk streaming, that's not how it works on your desktop, no reason to somehow force the Linux OS underneath the MPC software our MPCs are running on to make that choice, any audio file you play back or record could be streamed. Hopefully people are mostly using SSDs mounted inside the unit though, and we don't get too many complaints because people used a 5400rpm HD that hiccups every time people really bang on the pads! or the fact that thumb drives are slow as molasses.

I don't think the issue will be Disk Streaming itself, but teaching user how it works when they attach an external drive. User error is a very real thing, when it comes to something that seems simple. People had issues just connecting their hard drives.

Prepare for 10 million questions about disk streaming and why their hard drive no longer works and where is their content? The other unseen thing about disk streaming, is making sure the user back up their disk streaming drive. :smoker: That means spending more money and a whole bunch of people buy cheap drives, that fail in 2 weeks.

It can work for internal or external drives. When I setup my desktop and recording software. It's the first things I setup when installing everything. Nevertheless we have to wait and see, what the APC LIVE will be used for. NAMM is next week so expect lots of announcements.

Yes let's see what happens.
Everybody is excited about this disk streaming. I don't care so much.
I don't use audio tracks, I never run out of memory. I would like to have better effects and that's it.

Yo I'm done with it, I have music to make, do you and Ima do me. :smoker:

You might have not meant to write it that way, but there's no other way to take what you wrote. You flatly connect high track count to RAM in that freaking sentence.

Danoc wrote:If what's done is done, how do you go about getting disk streaming if it wasn't applied in the beginning?
:smoker:

We're getting disc streaming in an upcoming update, I never even got that far to where I could say that because you were attacking it as a solution. So yeah, like I said, in the code, the MPC is just running Linux, it's only not able to stream from disc because AKAI never implemented it.

Boom.
That's the list.
Great job Mr. Yorgos and everyone who posted here and there for Akai.
Thanks.

Future proofing, adoptions, hit records, and time can determine if something is a classic. The issue with the MPC X and Live is that it's now technology and they are playing catch up. Putting a touch screen on them is not pushing the envelope.

The LinnStrument and Roli Keyboards are pushing the controller worlds. Now if the MPC's had expressive touch control pads, Dante or AVB networking, MPC to MPC cascade function, expandable RAM, additional cards, more audio inputs/outputs. Then I say it would have the makings of a Classic.

Everything that is being incorporated is in every basic Software DAW out on the market. :smoker: As for the APC we have to wait and see. It could have expressive touch pad, Dante/AVB, and a cascade function.

You will need to abuse the hdd more than that to adversely affect it.

Drop it on a tile floor at 3ft.
Tap it with any hammer.
Throw it across the room at a wall.

Yes, I have done all this.

Naw not hurt the HD, but I have definitely had hard drives act up when hit with vibrations. In Ableton Live on older laptops with 2.5" HD's on occasion audio dropouts due to 18-24" bass bins and of course only in live situations.

I was pretty happy when SSDs got cheap enough for us common folk to afford them. remember reading an article with Prodigy where he was thrilled that the Macbooks were coming out with SSDs because it solved this exact problem...

It's not all the time or anything, but personally I haven't had anything like that since using SSDs so I'm sticking with them for laptops and the MPC. There was a sale on terabyte Samsung Evo around Xmas so I'm set.

Frisbi wrote:What if I keep my internal HD and connect an external SSD with usb just for streaming?
Possible?

Yeah, but I would switch them. Besides you're possibly throttling the SSD on the external USB port. I know at least in Controller mode, the internal SSD here is hitting 313mbs write and 323 mbs read. About the same as my USB 3 SSD plugged into a PCIe USB 3 port on an older Mac Pro. This is all good, but there's a theoretical 550 mbs from that same SSD mounted inside the MPC Live. Realistically probably 500mbs, still, that's about 35% faster.

Big warning here though, MPC PDFs really only talk about thumb drives mounted to the USB 3 ports on the back, I'm not sure why that is, but it's probably due to the way SSDs in my experience don't really like switching from Controller mode to Stand Alone.

Now if only they could fix the whole, switch from controller to stand alone. Maybe the APC Live will have just one mode and implement remote button like hybrid mixer do.

The big issue I see so far is that USB 3 mounted drives do not automatically mount when switched to Controller mode, the internal SSD in my Live unmounts and mounts just fine, but the external one needs to be unplugged and plugged back in for OSX to see it. This is troubling, not good etc. I don't think AKAI have anything more than a dialogue when you go from Controller mode to Stand alone, "are you sure you unmounted your drives?" etc. but they don't have that dialogue when you go from stand alone to controller mode, and either way, the external USB drive does not mount.
