So I've found a partial workaround for the current lack of multi-timbral MIDI functionality of the MPCX and MPC Live.
At present, you can only trigger an external MIDI synth for example, if you are on the specific track for that synth - regardless of what MIDI channel you set your external MIDI controller keyboard to. This means you cant play one synth with one hand via the pads, and use your other hand to trigger a second device with an external controller.
Now it doesn't solve the issue of switching MIDI channels on an external MIDI keyboard, but may be somewhat of a leap forward for those playing live.
Tune in to my Tubedigga live stream this evening at 9pm GMT on YouTube as I can't be bothered to record and edit a video! Plus I'll have live chat enabled for any questions you have.
