Reason does sound different to me than Ableton, but that's because of how I use to whore out Thor in Reason, compared to honestly - the little synth work I do *inside* of Ableton (when I got Ableton I jumped straight to Komplete and was also starting my hardware journey). Ironically, I hear more people complain about the Reason sound, but I like the flexibility of their synths and FX...when time is not of the essence, its sound design options are A1.
But I mean if you really want to test it out, we could always do a Sine Wave test, and maybe a few others. It would actually be a pretty healthy thing to do for the Yt channel *hmm*

I've heard of the Reason workflow, never the reason sounds. I wonder who is saying that and what kind of gear they are using? It must be a super hyper sensitive, sonic sound wave, measuring gear. As far as the sine wave Software DAW test, they've been done and blind tested. Nothing to write home about. :-D

Best to use our time making music.

Yeah man, if you put the same clip on any daw without any plugin, just flat, it obviously sounds the same.
I don't care so much about this mythology that every daw has a different sound.
They say Protools sounds better and this is why is the standard in studio recording but its not protools in itself, its the digidesign system, converters, audio card and so on.
If you just put Protools on a macbook pro with a focusrite cheap audio card, it sounds as the other daws.
So for me this debate is no sense.
If we talk about Reason, we have to talk about its native modules and extensions.
I listened to some beats I recorded more then 10 years ago with something like Reason 3 or so and I was surprised by how they sounded powerful.
I could never get to something like that with Ableton and Vsts.
I am getting near with Mpc.
So the only daw I would use instead of Mpc is Reason and that's it.
But at the moment I stay with my Mpc Live.

Protools did sound better back then, because the software and hardware was fully integrated. Other than that, what you stated is correct. At this point it's all about: hardware integration, native modules and extensions.

Reason has a sound because of the SSL emulation it has. All tracks are ran through it, so it wont be as transparent as say Protools which doesn't have a mixer. Reason has a warm lush sound and l love it. It would be just like running your music through a real SSL 9000 J, without turning a knob you will have a warm tight lush sound because of the circuitry. Propellerheads went for that emulation and nailed it.

Studio One has a bigger sound because it has more headroom than any DAW. That's why l love it.

Eyalc wrote:How does one DAW "sound" better than the other? You mean the presets? Not asking to be a pain. I've seen this statement multiple times and I don't understand. In the end it's all 1s and 0s that we can control to sound like we want them to. I always thought it's all about the interface and instruments the DAW comes with that inspire us to use them.

Really, not asking to be a pain. Someone educate me please!

I played around with reason it's a good emulation, but it's not a SSL 9000 by any means. Nevertheless reason improved with 9.5 and adding VST support. Can't you bypass the ssl mixer by tracking directly to the channel or something like that?

Protools is transparent. It has no sound what you put in it is what you get out. Protools is the major studio standard is because of great marketing! They came right at a good time when we were leaving tape to Adat to computers. Digidesign knocked Digital Performer out the box. Digi/Advid sat down st the table wkith Apple in cahoots to monopolize the industry. They had people believing you couldn't make great music without those two. They had me until l dehypnotized myself lol
There were vgreat records before them!
A great factor played wkth Protools, you could use the HD system (now HDX) and not tax your computer. That was to much money for the home producer. So MBox and Le came. Those were its down fall at the home market. Engineers were getting certified and getting credit on albums. It don't mean crap in 2019. Avid acted stupid people got fed up and they lost the home market. So bad so Avid let go over 1,000 employees. It sounds good because of great engineers.

Reason was cpu friendly. Now due to VSTi if you don't have the right comper and specs it will kill your computer.
I love reason for its sound, editing, blocks, sequencer, NNXT , combinator, SSL mixer, automaton lanes, Redrum, Refills (nothing like it), setup of three windows, you can open multiple sessions depending on your computer simultaneously , dope time stretch, turn audio into midi, explode midi tracks, have hardware synths that look just like the hardware and l can go on and on. That's why l don't really care what Akai does :-)

Anyone complaining about Reason sound are amateurs! They see the mixer and get afraud. They use it for an hour and can't grasp it and start complaining. They just don't know what the hell they are doing.

I don't wanna work with nothing else but S13.

Ummm dude l never said it was just like a real SSL. Hence the key word "Emulation". And l tell you without any slack the Reason SSL emultion kicks (___o___)<---
And its badass and l can prove it! Its no slouch and should be approached with seriousness!
I don't know about bypassing , why in the world would l want that? :WTF:

Bypass, because you don't want any color added. For archival and historical sound back up. :smoker: There's big money in the archival area of music. MONEY TIP! Nevertheless, reason is a nice tool, however my weapon of choice is Magix's Sequoia 14. :-D

I guess this discussion proves that an OUTSIDE DAW is NECESSARY.

When l want to back up l get the options to be dry or wet with Reason that's another part l love about it.

Oh and it has buss faders now which make gain staging so easy.

Well for ME a DAW is necessary. I went many years without the MPC so....

Archiving as in music from music 1920's. If you have the ears and technical know how.

Big money and lots of opportunity as an audiovisual archivist. Also many production houses, will pay to archive their old music. Depending on what hardware/software you know. This is off topic, but something to look into for those who are interested.

Producers who used drum machines, really need it because it's time consuming. :smoker: Lots of money on the table for those who have good ears and are organize.

Ummmm l have zero interest in that. My Reason 10 is used for making music, mixing and sound design which also makes lots of money ;-) plus its my lane .
