My understanding is that when loaded in RAM, samples are converted to a 32bit float format no matter what the source bit depth. I get it that for good audio output, the internal fx/eq/other processing needs to happen in that 32bit float format.

However, most of my samples are in 16bit 44.1K, and it seems to me that there would be extreme value in having an option to enable 16bit samples in RAM. Then, prior to values from the sample being processed, there would be a per value real time conversion from 16bit int to 32bit float.

Given all the other processing going on, I can't imagine an additional 16i to 32f conversion per value killing the CPU, and even if there were a slight performance hit, I would TAKE IT to effectively double the amount of audio that could be loaded in RAM.

Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere, but I feel like many of the complaints I have read about limited RAM (and my own issues of putting large chunks of live sets into single projects) would be minimized or go away completely if we could effectively double the available RAM for audio if we're using 16bit samples in the first place.
