I use slightly different velocities, tunes and timing maybe 1 tick later of earlier most of the time and I come up with some good ones. All from usually just one nice clear default clap, ie. default 4k claps, default Triton claps, or any drum cd clap you find. It has to be clear from the get go though cause after all you can't polish a turd.

The good old 808 or 909 clap through a compressor never fails.

Also, if you are layering sounds, try putting one quieter clap just an increment or two before your harder sound & maybe another quieter one just after.

layer a clap with a snare.....mix them so the snare doesnt shine. works for me.
