IS AN OUTSIDE DAW NECESSARY AT ALL?

Yes sir, p love the VCA in Studio One and Bus faders in Reason, they are the glue to a very nice mix. Delay Compensation in Reason l love it.

I always feel icky when people are so "pro-Reason", I grew up on it, once I switched to Ableton, I looked back only for Thor, and at this point have pretty much completely moved on. I promised myself I'll come back in a couple years when I get the *hopefully* second studio up (hey I've got goals, I want people coming through to make beats AND record - and I want a second production area cut-off form the main room, will have Reason running on there along with Maschine & FL Studio. Akai and Ableton will own the main room for now), but for now, Reason just had interactivity issues for me.

The biggest pro for me, everything was in the box, and it made sense to me physically

Reality, so much time is spent doing sound design, setting up combinators, I was frustrated with lack of VST support (I have 6-7), and frankly, I had no one to TEACH me how to use Reason, and that was a HUGE deal. I took an online class on Reason 4.0 to wrap my head around a lot of it, but 3+ years ago, before VST support came in, finding videos on Youtube about Reason was almost impossible, it was just not popular at ALL. The last thing for me was control...and that was tied to the first two things. There was no dedicated Reason controller, you could make remotes on your MIDI gear, but as someone rocking like a Radium61 and eventually an MPK249, it just never worked with the various synths, Thor specifically was a nightmare, I had to do so much by mouse, that my workflow was CRAP.

Then came Ableton with Push. I'd argue the only DAW/production software with more tutorials on youtube is FruityLoops. You can google search for problem solving. Is Push1/2 perfect, naw, but its so close that it eliminated 75% of my mouse work, expedited my work flow by like a factor of 5, less time was spent trying to do sound design, etc.

I try to be careful in comparing, I had a lot of personal growth musically around the time I switched, I also got into using outboard gear, but I still struggle to give Reason the same applause others do, I do love aspects of it, but at the end of the day, the end result is waht matters, and I can get 5 times the end result using Ableton. It has "too" many options.

Hey bro really feel your story anout Reason. I started out on Reason 3.0 and never left. Its what saved my production from giving up Protools and 2000XL.

Reason has come a long way bro. When Reason dtarted to grow into Record here are the things that kept me with it.

1. The squencer, closet thing to the MPC IMO.
2. Sweet simple editing tools.
3. Time stretch.
4. 3 different formats. A. Refills B. Rack Extensions. C. Rex files.
Refills these day are on a pro level and they sound dope. Re synths will put Thor outta business.
5. SSL 9000k emulation console.
Able to send 8 effects, EQ section etc is supa dupa sweet. I don't wanna mix without it.
6. Blocks!
7. VSTi support.
8. The Rack system and how you can route different things together and get something magical.
9. Delat Compensation button. On or off
Etc.
Its my bread and butter.
