To get the glitches go into the paramaters of a sound and set the decay to 'start' (not 'end' as it defaults) and increment the decay starting at the lowest till you get the desired glitch

Thanks that's a good tip!! Really that was the point of this thread to begin with but it got side tracked by gear stuff

I always thought that Prefuse's stuff sounds like it's made on an MPC and pretty much nothing else. It's just a big bunch of samples; some short, some long, some utra-short, some looped, some reversed... I never thought 'how does he do that on just an MPC?' It does sound like he puts a lot of work into it though. He puts a LOT of samples in one track.

whoa? prefuse switched to the 4000? i had no idea... if you check out his new projects he has a ton of old gear like rhodes, and other synths and organs... check out the new Piano Overlord EP and Savath & Savalas Manana EP coming out soon... its some of his best work.

Also, I don't know if he's just using samples from it or if he's using a real live one, but a LOT of his sounds come from an Elektron Sidstation. I have one and it is about the most recognizable synth out there next to a moog (in general). Just a thought....

keyword in greg's post. He, not they. only 1 person. dos, i dunno if we have the same definition of glitch...or maybe i'm just doing it wrong. i always thought glitch was rapidly repeated samples; you know, holdin down the button and it repeating very very fast, or slow, whatever you wanted. i still havnt figured out how to do that on my mpc1000

not that even f*cking matters, but for ya'll gettin' all tore-up over which mpc is using now....take a look over at www.prefuse73.com. in the photos section, you'll see an MPC4000 up on a chair next to his rhodes, and on the floor in the corner, his mpc2000xl. he bought the 4000 right after the release of 'one word extinguisher'. how do i know this, because he said it in an interview. again, i don't know why there is so much fuss, Scott Heron (prefuse73/savath savalas/piano overlord) has released stuff since one word/extinguished. if you don't know, then look. trust me, i run a record store....i gotta know!

peace

There's lots of different ways that people get "glitchy."

Some of the glitch pioneers would get a CD and scuff up the bottom of it...put it in the CD player, which produces the sound of the CD skipping and tripping out - and they would sample that.

There's lots of ways to fuuk up a sample with DSP, mis-using effects, abusing the timestretch function, mis-using sample editors, etc.

On a side note, yeah, I've also read a bunch of interviews with S.H. and I agree, he doesn't come off like the coolest guy around.

That's putting it lightly. His music doesn't grab me, it's like he's not expressing anything at all, just doing parlor tricks.

not true with deeper tunes like perverted undertones- is a maturer sound though...

I'm not the biggest fan of "glitch-hop", but I must say that I like some of the sh*t Diplo does with hsi drums when he does that glitch sh*t... I wish I could pull that sh*t off... I've tried Note Repeat and about a thousand other things... I mean it's actually more of a stutter so I figured Note Repeat would help (Cause it just sounds like a repeated drum hit interrupting the loop) but man that sh*t is hard to do and make it sound real and not lose the flow of the loop... At least I have problems with it... Like I said though it's not really my style...
