Hi guyz... it is been a long time!

We are working on a live project and i would like to know if you got any tips for live performance with the 2kxl.
eg: use of the fader, 16lvls, etc
Any kind of tips could be useful

Thanks Fellaz :worthy:

my biggest tip is about keeping your programs in order.
you reserve tracks 61-64 as 'setup' tracks.
set track 61 to DRUM1, set 62 to DRUM2, set 63 to DRUM3, set 64 to DRUM4
now for each track, set the pgm change to the correct program that each DRUM slot should be set to
(you will need to also make sure your programs have unique program change numbers. in program edit you hit open window on the program name and i generally set it to the same number as the program is in memory, so the first one is 1, etc).

this way, whenever that sequence starts, tracks 61-64 will set each DRUM slot to the correct program. the other benefit is you dont have to worry about it not triggering if the track is muted. also, if you keep your pgm changes restricted to those tracks, you wont worry about accidentally setting two different numbers on different tracks...this behaves unpredictably when you do that.
the final thing i do is open window on the program name from program edit, copy the program name, then paste that name as the track name for 61-64. this way i can always tell which program these sequences should be using.
it might be overkill for some, but i am almost always running at max sounds or programs, so this really helps me keep things in order.

which is really another live tip in itself....i try to keep all my programs and sequences available in memory. so that means judicious use of PURGE and also making sure to get rid of sounds i'm not actually using.

yes, the slider is cool for decay or filter or pitch effects.
i never use mine thought because that is always the first thing to break on an mpc, so mines always broken.

I used to use my nv slider a lot too, and yep, it was the first thing to break, replaced it once, broke a few years later, I just let it stay broken.

yes 100%. i do this on certain tracks, great tip.

one thing you got to keep in mind though is that the filter is not continuous...it will only change with each new trigger of the sample. not a big deal for short hits but for long samples this might not behave how you'd expect.

Do you know of any smoother MPC Qlink Faders? Perhaps something closer to a 2019 DJ Crossfaders.

It's a data encoder so you're adjusting MIDI values from 0-127. Like Richie said, it only affects note hits and not the sound in real time. "Smoothness" wouldn't really help or play a part in that. You could probably spray some contact cleaner and a couple drops of sewing machine oil in there if you want it to feel more "loose".

The Qlink Fader in the 2000XL is the same one inside the MPC 4000. So I would be using it for machine. So having it looser would benefit. Thanks for the Tip: Never used sewing machine oil before. Does it cause any issue later on?

2kxl nv slider is for retriggered events. It's not real time/continuous at all.

i dont think any amount of oil is gonna make that slider any better - its just not a 'performance' fader.

if you really want something like that you'll probably have to hack something from a dj mixer or the smallest, loosest fader i've ever found is the innofader mini that they make for like dj controllers. great fader. you'd still need to do some hacking to make it work in an mpc.

and still, as we've been saying, you are never going to be able to use it to full potential because of the nature of how it works - only affecting new triggers, not a continuous change.

Do you know anyone who's soldered a pin connector to the 2000xl, so the mini innofader could just plug in?
The MPC 2000XL slider has 6 pins right. 4 on top and 2 on the bottom. I know the Mini Innofader has 4 pins.
Any ideas?

I have not touched my MPC 2000XL in a long time, is there a way to make the 2000xl loop without holding down a pad or having the sequencer running. I do on the 4000, using the Play Trigger option.

I still use mine every now and again but not to the level of when I ONLY had a 2kxl. I used to make single cycle loops for basslines and I'd set the edit params to a long release so I could tap the pad and the bassline would just keep going until I hit another pad. I "think" that was a combination of note on and release or some shit. Can't remember exactly. I don't remember trying it with long samples.

I can try again this weekend and see if I can get back a little of my 2kxl magic. I use to make that orange muhfucca sing back in the day cause that was all I had for a drum machine.

usually a couple of those are ground, so 6 pin/4 pin shouldn't matter as long as you match up the pins you need.
i want to say one final time, i really don't think that the effort is worth it, but do whatever you want - i'm always interested in hacks.
