Yep, @op, there is a reason why we say these things.

Example. I have an ASR10 I learned on. I have not used it in forever. I will NOT get rid of it because it has a certain sound that I just don't want to be without AND the sentimental value. Just keep it.

we get it. your attached to your old gear.
you can accomplish these "sounds" with a bit of time in a daw more or less.
i get someone is going to argue this ofcourse, but in this day in age it can happen.
there plugin that mimic the akai s950 filter out there to achieve that sound some people were getting while making hiphop in the 90's. Theres basically always someway to achieve a sound on a computer. its like people saying mpcs are mandatory to chop up a sample. thats possible on a daw, but... easier to buy gear sometimes to do it, or just preference.

lets be real here.

Yup you're right. We can easily duplicate a certain sound with some EQing and Compression. BUT...Nothin like have Vintage Gear around. I can equate it to Owning a Classic Car in the Garage. Yea This 2019 model drives much better than the 1968 Model, But......

Ok........the thing is,how you going to re create a sound in your daw if you dont know exactly how to do it.Thats pro work and lots of experience using said gear needed too.I can simulate something but not precisely to the analog which is what comes through on most older machines-More analog staging.Things get more clean and digital as time goes on.Plus and its a big plus >whenever you digitally process audio, every plugin you use actually deteriates your sample.Less is more.Which is why to start with a good solid sound is key.Too much processing going on these days

um... you dont actually need vst's at all. that was just an example.
there are ways to gain the artifacts you would like in your samples, like for example drums.
people used to record them a certain way into there drum machine because of sample time(memory) issues. you can actually replicate this without any vsts and if need be only 1 minor internal effect in your mpc live/x or software. so you dont need another daw, you can even use just the mpc itself(which they label a daw apparently) with resampling techniques .
im just saying you dont need to spend a bunch of money to get a sound. like i didnt buy the mpc x for its sound. i knew how to get the sound i was looking for in multiple programs because getting it so i already knew what to do. i usually make lofi, breaks, hiphop/boombap style music. im not exactly sure what your trying to accomplish but with a 3000 id assume something along the lines of that.

See what I’m saying when I said I get mixed reviews on this? Lol. Yes, you are right, I do have a sentimental reason with it but if this thing were to just sit here and collect dust, I’d much rather sell it to someone who is going to use it. I want to pass this machine down the same way it was passed down and sold to me 11 years ago. I just have to make sure my reasoning is truly real and not out of emotions or boredom. If I don’t embrace what’s new, I’ll start becoming my own worst enemy

Now who wouldn't want a classic Shebly GT in their garage
alongside their brand new 2019 Bullitt?

Thats the same reason I sold my 3k rather than keep it :)

I think that basically you use what you feel right with, the world of today gives you a lot of different possibilities and there is not one better and one worse.
I made music with Ableton for 10 years and then I switched to Mpc. Is my music improved? I don't know but I know that I feel comfortable with Mpc now and I don't feel it's better or worse then before.
When I was using Ableton, I thought that without some Vst I used massively, I could not live.
But actually I learnt to obtain more or less the same with just Mpc internal effects.
Better? Worse? I really don't know.
If I want to go to dirty sounds, I go for Akai effects.
If I want to stay clean, I go for Air effects.
When you learn how to use properly what you use, you get where you want to get.
Mpc has all you need but also maybe Elektron and also maybe Roland Sp and also Ableton and also Reason.
I use Mpc because I feel comfortable with i it, just that.
Work deeply with it and you can obtain any sound you are after.
But that's also true for Elektron, Roland, Ableton and so on.

Def yes! I did it from a USB floppy drive with a pgm and sounds from 3k, I was curious eheh but it works!

I tried that with a bunch of old MPC1000XL floppies and my MPC Live never managed to read them. I also tried to check it on Windows 10 and OSX without any success. Is there a certain way to do so?

Assuming you meant the 2k, the MPC1K doesn’t have a floppy drive, it has compact flash. I was able to load the Programs and sequences from my 1k’s compact flash and it worked pretty well. Only sticking point was JJOS programs, which use a different program format and were rather hit or miss if they came over okay or not.

Yet mimic is not the same...

Agreed on being real... and I won’t argue the merits of old gear vs. new gear... it’s totally a dependent on the person... how much they want to invest in dealing with deficiencies and how much reward they get out of the real sound versus what is close enough. It’s all absolutely all personal preference.
