replacing a backlight in the mpc 60 II

Yo,

I just picked up a mpc 60 II and so far I've been mad stoked about it.
The only exception is that the backlight is almost completely burned out. Right now I'm just shining a lamp on the screen in order to illuminate it enough to use it, but I really need to replace the backlight soon.

My question is how hard is it to replace the backlight on the 60 by myself? I don't have any technical experience with something like this, but my pops is a computer technician so I figure he should be able to help me out in gettin' the backlight replaced.

Also, how would you go about actually doing the repair?

Your pops should be able to do that as long as he can solder a little. First thing you do is unplug the MPC. Then disassemble the MPC so you can lift off the top cover. Be careful not to pull up to far as there are wires connecting the display and other components on the top. If you look at the display from behind the cover you can see two wires connected to the backlight which is behind the display. All you need to do is unsolder these wires and solder to your new backlight. I think these are AC so polarity may not matter (I will have to check on that) but just to be safe make note of which wires go where and duplicate that one the new backlight. In my opinion http://backlights.telesisgear.com/ have the best backlights. They might have better instructions than I gave too!!!

Yeah Telesis Gear is where I got my backlight. I got the white one. All I did was take the display out of it's casing, ship it to them, they replaced my old one, and mailed it back. Once I got it back it was a piece of cake to re-install. Now it's like new! They charge like $35 for the backlight but if you send them your display they will install it for $15 more + shipping. I did'nt have to solder anything and the turnaround time was like 2 days!

yo james, what kinds of backlights are available? you said you got a white one. the OG backlight is blue, right? are there just the blue one and white one available?

i'm having problems viewing mine as well. it's an OG blue 60II backlight.

with your white one can you view everything clearly in a pitch black room?

it sounds like the white one would be able to do that without a problem.

yup, white is clearer in dark or in light.

this blue backlight is such a pain! i mean, i've got near perfect vision and all but i STILL labor to view the screen. a $50 complete replacement sounds reasonable to me, so long as i'll be able to view everything in a pitch black room. i have minimal lighting sources as it is, but even if i hung a light right over the screen like dude was doing from the earlier posts in this thread i would get annoyed with glare and the heat coming from the bulb.

is this telesis place my best bet?

how'd you get the display off DJames? I'm gonna look at it tonight...a backlight would be nice, as would some new pads...hmmm, tax returns=MPC refurb=good times for spring break beats..

Yeah, I put everybody onto the white backlight thing way back on the 60 yahoo group, there's pictures in the files section of that group that I took
as well.

I had a brand new blue backlight and got the white from midi rakete, but telesis might have them. The backlight for the MK II is different that the one for the MK I, make sure they know the difference. Midi rakete can hook you up, but the euro conversion might be kinda rough now.
