No ad hominem needed, because frankly you don't know what you're talking about.

It’s illogical to complain about too many choices for music listening. The notion that things were better for the listener when only major label / imprint selections were readily available is preposterous. Think of how many great local artists never got heard because they didnt have the resources or savvy to get in front of some A&R guy.

In order to wade through the crap, you just need a good site that’s well organized. I like Bandcamp.

It obvious you don't know what you're talking about. Because you contribute nothing to the conversation. You're trying to be right, I'm talking to those who want to do this for a living and how things are really works. (Not some online theory.) By the way I'm not in the music industry, I'm in the publish business. <---- That little things tell me, you have no idea what you're talking about.

Show me 10 indie touring bands and I'll show you 9 who are in debt and 1 who is barely turning a profit. It's pretty obvious that you've never been on tour.

I wish we could talk about people that do it for the art, and less about the tradesman aspect.

We can always talk about the craft. For this conversation I'm done with EnochLight. I'll never look at my big band bossa nova Enoch Light Vinyl the same again. Whats on your mind, @icepulse. What new techniques have you discovered?

Nothing specific. Just ruminating on the distinction between art & craft. How craft is the road, and art is the destination. How the one thing unteachable in art school is art. I dunno. When I hear talk about the business end, I tune out. Van Gogh barely sold a handful of paintings, though his output was enormous. But he couldn’t bear to do anything else. He sold his shoes for a new tube of Prussian Blue.

hand up here - I dont make beats to release them primarily but to keep them as specials most of the time, I find myself rebuilding a lot old ones with newer aspects at least for reggae - eg just rebuilt the famous Sleng Teng Riddim again (probably the third or fourth time) - which is pretty much default settings out of a Casiotone MT40 - all instruments and beat come out of the box as presets more less ...

apart from that I love music and working with gear to keep my thoughts off the boring IT job ... I have done and built a lot of different genres - even sold a few to some known artists but for me its more about the craft itself than the money I see it as a hobby that occasionally pays off but as I said its more to my relaxation and to learn and improve the craft than my day to day income which in fact I would probably would hate to constantly needing to deliver ...

That's adorable. If I didn't know what I was talking about, I wouldn't rightfully call you out on your bullshit you spouted earlier. But please - continue - your "publishing business" sounds fascinating. Also, be sure to tell those kids to keep their bikes off your lawn.

Doing it for the art is far more interesting, for sure!

Most would agree it's far more easier to be a fan of music these days than it ever was 20+ years ago. Prior to the Internet, iTunes, Spotify, etc - there was absolutely no way to curate your personal tastes and listen to anything, anywhere, from anyone the world over - right from the comfort of your smartphone or home computer. I love it.

Who said it was because we only had major label imprints to listen to?? Independent music has existed as long as corporate music has. If thats all you knew about 'back then' were the big players, you weren't even looking very hard at your local record store (unless you're not old enough to have had those). You bought indie magazines, you read newsprint DIY zines, you actually went to local shows and networked with your other musician friends. You do know that all those punk bands little hipster kids buy shirts up at Hot Topic and H&M of were dirt poor, spending out of their own pocket to put out records and tour types when they were around right? The Misfits? Glenn Danzig stuck the damn center labels on the records himself when they came back from the pressing plant. 1979. They folded and glued all the covers together themselves. When you bought one of their records you sent that money to Glenn's PO Box and he hand wrote your address on the mailer it was sent to you in. Was the same with Minor Threat's Dischord Records, The Dead Kennedys Alternative Tentacles Records, all of them. Punk is just one example. Hip-hop was and sometimes still is the same way too. You think drum and bass and house music sells major label numbers? Somebody is still putting it out, you can bet Capitol and Warner Bros aren't wasting money on it.

Music has long existed outside of the major label industry, if you couldn't find it, thats just plain laziness.

 like I said, you don’t know what you’re talking about. All you are doing is showing your ignorance. You sample music thinking you own it. You make some basic beat from a loop pack, thinking you produce. You have more games install on your computer than plug ins.

How did that xlr mic work out for you? What is an xlr mic? I mean really, who buys an Rme interface then look for the cheapest pre amp to record vocals into a mpc live. Because they don’t want to bring the interface and laptop. Really???

Also why would you record vocals into an mpc live, and go into the rca inputs. You do know those rca’s are for phono input only.  If you cannot figure that basic stuff out, I don’t know what to say.

But hey, do you, and keep pretending.
