you can linear sequence with the mpc, just record a really long loop....but you cant loop with the MV?!

please correct me if im wrong, because i dont understand why you would want linear sequencing.

BTW. im not arguing against it, i just really dont understand the reasons why.

I'm not trying to start an MPC vs. MV war...To each his own and I really have no vested interest in what anybody thinks...I'm just imparting my opinion, and having owned EVERY SINGLE MPC EVER MADE, sans the 1000, I can tell you with assurity that the MV takes the pie here.

Firstly, yes the MV, like you said does have a linear sequence, but it has a quick set loop for making pattern style sequences that you can just create one after another, and then when you are done with your loops, just copy and paste, or whatever like you would in protools or cubase, (and with the VGA card, it BLOWS away the MPC)...But that's only if you want to create the whole song on the sequencer, which I do.

All that being said, there are definate advantages to pattern mode and because Roland has heard the cry of some of their own users and users to be, they have added Pattern mode in V3.

Now, people that think that Roland will "abandon" the MV, on a 4000 forum have got to be joking. If the MV never had another update again after Namm, it's already VASTLY improved on it's original specs when V3 is released on Jan 20th....while Akai has yet to meet their opening specs for the 4000! Come on guys, I owned the 4000 for a long time and I know what we were pissed about.

There are some things that piss me off with the MV...Firstly, there is a multilevel button on it but it only controls velocity rather than pitch, filter, decay, etc, like the 16 levels on the MPC....I think this is going to be changed with a future update though. I also wish I had the note variation slider back and the tilting lcd was nice but now that I use my monitor, that doesnt matter....I like the pads on the MV eqully to the MP....

BPM sync (realtime timestretch) is a godsend on the MV. Effects, although you have to resample to get more than 1 blow the MP out of the sky, but I use my Motif for effects anyway...

I don't know, I don't want to piss anyone off...Everyone has their own flavor and opinions but I'm telling you from a professional point of view that the MV is more fun, and inspirational to use and I find myself making better music on it, plain and simple...Throw PPQ #s and envelopes all you want but when it comes down to it, the MV was the choice for me by far.. It took me a little warming up on my friends before I saw the light but it's just better to use.

I'll get back to your tech quesitons a couple posts up later but for the time being, I just wanted to post gererally.

The proof is in the pudding really, ask your average MV owner how they feel about it and ask your average MPC owner what they think. (WHEN NOT ASKED TO COMPARE TO THE MV)...Every MV owner I know is happier than a pig in sh!t, unless he just came from the MP world and then it usually takes about a month.

No disrespect....Do fa self, and enjoy what you got.

^^^^thats true

I think every ones logic is differant. We all work differant. But at the same time its still fun to ponder.

I think i realize what i was wondering with linear sequencing.......on the triton it has "loop points" where you actually have to turn on the loops....buy you could loop each track differantly. Im not sure if this is the same, but it sounds like it. But anyways, i did like this as you could go off on a solo or something, just go off, and then replay it, and maybe catch a loop that you like.

i could also see linear better for "instrumentals" or techno....wheras it changes throughout the song, even if its only slight changes. I got to admit i dislike building bridges using loops.

but at the same time, i usualy just make loops cause i do hiphop. I break down my measures using time sig changes, and get stutters, etc. then drop it into a diffearnt loop, or back in or whatever, and im use to doing it with the next sequence....then once i get what i like, i drop it into song mode. So i think id be lost without this.

You know, I guess it really doesn't matter which machine you use just as long as you're comfortable using it. I mean if you really think about it I'm sure most people are using some type of software recording program along with the mpc\mv and for myself I use sonar 3, and the mpc combined with sonar gives me everything that I might ever want. Most software programs have realtime timestretching, audio tracks, effects, ect. There is nothing wrong with having a sampler that does this also, but I think it boils down to what you're comfortable with. But I would still be concerned about rolands track record with abandoning their products (ex. I have the varios, the mmp-2 pre amp, DS90 monitors, my friend has the fantom-s all are good products and all have been abandoned), which looses their value dramaticly ex. the roland variphrase was originally priced at $3500 and after 3 years you could get it used for $400, the mpc2000xl was priced at $1600 in 1999 and I know people that have sold them for $1000 (eventhough you can buy one new, now, for $1300).
To be honest I hope roland never abandon the mv8000 because competition will only motivate both companies to continuiosly make both machines better, so everyone wins. peace.

OS 3 seems to put the MV at the same level as the MPC no ? what would hold me up switching from mpc to mv is that there is still not a proper modulation matrix for the MV....
and why do you guy consider that 24/96 is still the reason why the mpc is better, i've never used it personally, is the sound that better ?

Man now that the OS 3 is released did you change your mind about that statement of yours ?

I played with an MV at a GC for a day....I didn't like it. I can't stand roland....they make they're products so counter intuitive to use it's not even funny. I really don't think it measures up to the MPC as far as sound goes. It's a neat lil toy that looks like an absolute great joy to try and wrap your head around....but if you wanna make beats and have a good tool to do it with....I think Akai has this one on lock down...even with this new OS.

Yes, because it wasn't the drum pad or pattern seq. It was the fact that the program change in the MPC works so much better then on the MV.
The Fantom X controls banks better then the MPC (Thats what I'm using now))When you have lots of gear 4 midi outs and easy bank changes become a must. That is where the MV lacks IMO. Only 2 midi outs with a upgrade option for a third, 300 plus dollars later. But I spoke with a Roland rep who told me that they were planning on making the MV able to import patch lists of other gear and revamp that area. Thats when I relized why am I trying to make that MV do things that Cubase can do with ease??So I got Cubase and now Im happy.
BUt to be honest nothing will ever be as easy to use as the MPC.
Dont get me wrong, MV is tight and OS 3 is a big jump. But maybe its because I had a 2000xl, and a MPC60II so the 4000 for me is logical.
BUt to anwser your question NO OS3 dosn't make it better for me.

Thanks

Ok i felt for a time that i had make a mistake by chosing a MPC and I was tempted to sell it i have to say for the sequencing part of it, coming from computer linear sequencing i found very hard to compose in pattern because i tend to visualize my music in time on a linear line, and it's hard to get use to pattern composing i have to say, but even with the new os of the MV i think i m going to stick with my mpc and try to compose patern
i'm really annoyed that the MV has no proper modulation matrix, plus filters seems to sound like utter shyt, the FX seems to be crap even if i think the one on the MPC are shyte as well, only 16 part, 2 midi out etc....

That said, i'd like to tell that the mood on the "MVNation" forum is a lot happier that the MPC one  are MV guys happier with there machine than MPC headz ?

God ! i just discovered that you could apply "rumba" quantization template to your grooves
there is nothing that makes me more uncomfortable than to have Rumba templates on my machine, even knowing that it's there, in the shadow, insidiously waiting to be used, gives me a cold shiver in my back

Wouldn't know! Never found a need to hang out on that board, given I don't own the machine......

That's because Roland is doing nothing but making an already SICK sequencer better. The MV is the only piece of gear I've bought that was even better than my expectactions.

I refrain from saying it, being on the MPC forum, and the 4000 is great but the MV makes me so much happier than the 4000 ever did that I can't even put it into words.

My MV is my favorite piece of gear (and I've got plenty).

V3 is just icing on the cake...It's actually icing on the icing...
