I have no intentions of opening up my MPC LIVE. I bought the MPC b/c fiddling with Ableton settings/drivers/USB hardware was slowing up my creative process.

I find this article interesting because it confirms that akai is modeling the MAC/PC experience on your desktop with linux software & hardware. As I have said before, I wonder whether the hardware or software will be the driving force behind akai’s MPC line in the future. Music Hardware has major limitations relative to a modern laptop & the fact that they cannot use windows or apple on the MPC hardware makes it even more difficult. I suspect eventually the APPLE/PC software will have to take a back seat to the hardware/linux OS or VICA-VERSA.

I purchased my MPC LIVE for the hardware. I really like the crossfader on the AKAI FORCE but Ableton [berlin] & NI [berlin] & Serato [new Zealand] appear to be the leaders in beat/DJ music software. Clearly there are some funky computer developers/programmers in Germany.

I don’t expect there will be a JJOS hack for these new MPCs. MPC stuff has some cool knobs/pads but I don’t suspect we will get the universe of customized MPC that we did from JJOS, forat, MPCSTUFF, 16squarez on previous MPCs.

I also rec a short but comprehensive book based in the distro u use
Apress and http://www.surfingturtlepress.com/ are good places to start
The free Ubuntu manual is solid, I hear openSUSE has good documentation but I cannot vouch for SUSE
Makeuseof.com has a solid guide for kubuntu/KDE but I would not rec it for Ubuntu/gnome

on servers i use centos, had Ubuntu/Debian on my private machines, but moved to fedora, closer to centos.
the artile shows the weekness of the new mpcs, everything connected by USB, so you never get perfect timing.

So who's gonna hack the OS so we can get all the things we've been asking for and more?

I don't think much can be done a la JJOS. The person who did JJOS had access to the source code for everything. It's not really a hack, just further development. This is not possible with what we have on the MPC Live/X.

The OS (in the strict meaning of the term) on the MPCs is Linux, what makes it an MPC is the application that runs on it. This application has the same relation to the OS that something like Cubase running on a computer has to Windows or macOS. Even if you had full access to the Windows source code and were able to replace it with what you like, you wouldn't be able to add many interesting new features to Cubase. The musically interesting parts of the MPC are all in this one application. We can replace it, but we can't really change it... and if I wanted to write new software from scratch, I probably wouldn't target an expensive platform under someone else's control like the MPCs.

Commonly requested features like MIDI out over USB and multiple MIDI inputs, the lack of those are actually mostly related to the user interface. Other things are (better sampler features, disk streaming) pertain to the structure of Akai's application. None are in any way limited by the OS (in the strict sense of the term OS).

I hoped for a while it'd be feasible to run something alongside the MPC software, but unfortunately it takes over the screen completely, and getting anything else on there would mean killing the MPC software, kind of like quitting one desktop application and losing all your work to open another. It doesn't seem like a very promising endeavour, so I'm just using the MPC as it is right now. It's pretty good already.

my main windows desktop just died on me this week, so I am typing this from my Ubuntu laptop that I also bought in 2014 that has NEVER given me a problem. My windows must’ve caught coronavirus & died b/c I can’t even get to the windows log in screen.

Thank god I got this MPC LIVE this year, I can still sequence/record & record/chop & mix all in this 1 box. Otherwise, I’d stuck without ableton to save me. Computers are great & clearly the future but the viruses/crashes/latency/driver problems kill my music vibe. The MPC is my all-in-1 solution.

I am working on a spreadsheet with all the FX in 1 place since the manul has them spread all over the place. what’s the best way to share it with the MPC community forever ? I have dropbox but I rarely use it.

They'll probably stay on the Windows or MacOS they've been using..
