Yeah- like i said DJ's....those kats aren't dj's....they're more like tape jockeys....cus i swear they call em MIXtapes but there's never any mix. It's more like a compilation.

I'm referring to dj/producers like:

Q-tip
Jay Dee
Prince Paul

I started out as a non-dj producing. This is only because I was completely broke. As a matter of fact, I started producing 6 years ago using a demo version of Fruity loops...and i used that until about may of 04. the only reason that i didn't dj is because i didnt have the cash to get any equipment. even now, i just bought an mpc 2000xl for $300 (i was gonna use that for a couple of tables and a mixer, but an Mp for 300 was a once in a lifetime offer).
My turntable is pretty sh!tty (numark pt01), i bought it because i needed one because i was sampling downloaded soul mp3s from kazaa-lite (i like the scratch and pop of wax). And its portable, so when i go digging i can listen to my finds there on the spot.

if i would've chosen he dj route from the beginning, I would just now start producing. I think that when i get to that level, i'll be just that more dangerous. Until that point, when I get the cash, or when i inheret some gear, ima ride whatever i got till the wheels fall off.

I pay respect to the dj/producers out there...Ima get there--soon.

I think it's easier for a DJ/Producer to do the damn thing cause he has a certain experience he can apply to it, but the Producer that doesn't dj has only 1 craft to master that he can invest his time in.
I never DJ'd but I had vinyl since childhood, and I was an audiophile in my past building up a vintage stereo gave me experience with EQing and cable connections and understanding frequencies which is something I can apply to this.

I dig what you are saying cuz all these cats developed their ear, arrangement, and style from listening and learning from records. But at the same time great keyboard players like Jame Poyser, A Touch of Jazz, Easy Mo Bee and others can lay down that same vibe resample their shit and still make some fat ass beats to you know. But nowadays they call it R&B when it used to be smooth hip hop.

I like Green Lantern.... his stuff's crazy. He did #1 Spot for Luda didn't he? With the Austin Powers chops and stuff...

I think they can be separate arts.

i mean. i dont consider myself a dj. But if i had to pick out a set or playlist....i think i would do very good. Plus i can mix as well as some of my better dj friends.

I think its more the "ear". i think you can have what people consider a "dj ear" without actually being a dj....thats why we have good producers that dont dj!

I think anything, its more of how much other music influences you...and how much you listen to other music.

djs have an advantage because its thier job to play a variety of music (even if its just hiphop) so really, its easier for them to have that ear because its been exposed.

but a plain producer jumping into the game, has to catch up with his listening.feel me?

maybe producer/djs are just djs at heart? they just started out differantly.
