What would be the legal consequence of hacking the MPC X?

Perhaps, It could've been handled in a different manner. Nevertheless, if I just bought a company that was bankrupt. I'm going cut off as much debt as possible. InMusic did not buy Akai PRO as a personal hobby, It's business.

Could it be avoided? Yes! License your IP (Design, Code) for a certain time limit and set limit on what can be developed from it. Mr. Linn could've fought but it would've cost him his company. Overall he made the right decision. Also this is one reason, I bought my LinnStrument and AdrenaLinn III. If he ever release the LINNDRUM 2, I'll buy it.

If he made Adrenalinn with a stereo input and accepting line level, I would have used it.
It's a really interesting effect machine.

The AdrenaLinn III is nice bought two just because of that mono reason. Nevertheless from a moral point, there's no need to hack the mpc x/live since they still support and write code for it. Now, gear that they no longer support, I'm 1000% open to that. 60, 3000, 4000, 1000, 2500, 5000, 2000/2000xl.

They could know at anytime because of updates and by the fact your MPC PC/standalone have a network connection....

About legals : a really complex question as the Akai MPC firmware relies on a bunch of Linux and open source GPLized softwares.
They can't attack you If you do not do Akai specific code reverse enginering....and just hack around the Akai specific components, but they could void your warranty, stop to support you, could black list your serial number...

If you disassemble the MPC ARM binary, or get it from a friend and run it on an embededd Linux platform....it is probably a copyright infringement.

its quite amazing that when you buy a product direct from roger he does all the support himself...even to the point of having a one on one skype call...this guy is the real deal.

License agreements, trade secrets, non compete terms... the list is pretty long for employees who leave or are terminated.

On the other hand, as a user, you can pretty much do whatever you want with your device. The legal concerns come into play when you start distributing information or modified firmware.

Regardless, I doubt anybody posting in this thread is a lawyer or consulted with a lawyer on it. YMMV.
