Pt. 1: Can anyone tell me how this guy injects bass inside bass, layers it between bass with a dash of bass sprinkled on top?

Pt. 2: Can my mpc 1000 do that?

i havnt listened to much of madlib's stuff, but i heard he uses the sp-303 for most of his beats. i dont know if he still uses it though. what album/tracks are you talkin about?

Hi - like the previous reply said: do you have any audio clips or track names and we can take it from their..

"Pt. 2: Can my mpc 1000 do that?"

Short answer = 'No'. Longer answer: A sampler can only ever replay what it has recorded or what it has been given. If you give your MPC some kick arse bass notes, it will play some kick arse bass; if you give it shite, it will play shite. If Madlib's stuff shakes mountains, he is doing this with some serious synths that may or may not be sampled back into his sampler of choice..

i'ma geek out right now cause i love madlib....

(check stonesthrow.com for samples of his stuff)

from what i can remember he was mostly rocking the sp1200, especially during the period that he did the lootpack album (classic beats on here, an amazing album if you don't already own it) and the quasimoto album (probalbly one of my all time favorite albums, its a strange album but AMAZING production wise).

then i read an interview around when he did the shades of blue album (beats made from samples he took from the jazz label blue note records). at that point he said he pretty much only used the sp-303 for that album. and i think it been like that ever since. sp-303. cats flipped when they found that out cause its such a cheap piece of gear and yet he can flip the craziest beats out it.

....PLUS the effects on the 303 are pretty damn nice. the bit cruncher in the 303 ACTUALLY WORKS. you can make stuff SUPER grimey and punchy (close to how an sp1200 would) when you mess with the bit rate on the 303. sooo nice, unlike the crappy one in the 1000 which just sounds like a cheap guitar distortion pedal put on top of whatever you try to use it on....ehh, to me its really friggin horrible and isn't actually changing the bitrate or at least sounding like it. akai kinda pussed out on that one.

oh and to pwmars question:

one good way of enhancing stuff on the 1000 to gett sick bass would be to resample stuff filtered. say you have a bass drum on pad1. filter it down with a low pass filter so its just all lowend. then record the sample internally in the 1000 as it is, filtered. trim and save this sample under a new name. now go back to pad1 (which has your original bass drum sample) and in the sample assignments for pad1 add your filtered sample to layer 2. you have to make sure they match up properly as far start points. but now your bass drum will have a lot more bottom added to it. works good for snares, as well as most things.

now i've never tried doing this with a bass note but i guess if you filter it super low and keep piling it on it might have a noticeable effect.

....and since i assume you like madlib from your post this other tip might be helpful. if you want to make stuff grimier (dropping bitrate to sound more raw/sp1200) you can do it. one way is to take a sample like a snare and tune it UP by like 20. then rerecord it and assign it to another pad. then on that pad tune it DOWN by 20. makes it nice and dirty/punchy, lots of digital artifacts and what not. you can make stuff sound like it was sampled on an atari if you go crazy with this.

there are many ways to flip stuff once you sample it into the 1000. just gotta sit there and try until it sounds right.
(or search through the old posts, thats pretty much where i learned everything i just posted).

ok hope this helped and sorry for this long ass novel of a post.
i have too much time on my hands.

peace.

I just got into the game. I got tired of buying music and not feeling satisfied. Madlib's stuff is the only stuff that I'm feeling right now. As far as specific tracks these are the main ones:

Album: Madvillain

Shadows of Tomorrow, All Caps, Sickfit and especially Rhinestone Cowboy

Album: Jaylib

Intro (both Lib and J Dilla but I thing the first part is Lib; only if you have a good system can you feel the bass in the first part), Champion Sound.

These two albums are what I'm feeling most out of his stuff as far as beats go. Seems like he converted Dilla and both are making vicious material.

Thank you guys for your comments. I will research further into what you are suggesting.

he has an upright bass which he has a little knowledge on how to play.

sometimes he plays bass, sometimes he filters, it all depends on what he feels like doing. asked him this question the last time i saw him.

yeah he filters loops or he uses a synth or a real bass. it just depends on the track.

I always liked that bass on Headlock for LMNO.... that beat was so dirty and cool as fugg...

Well all the beats on madvillan and jaylib was done on the 303 so u dont need any expensive equipment.

the key is finding them dope records with them dope samples and studying them and trying things out.

im not sure what u mean when u say "Pt. 1: Can anyone tell me how this guy injects bass inside bass, layers it between bass with a dash of bass sprinkled on top? "

jpeg: Pt. 1 of my question doesn't mean anything. It's just hyperbole. Translation = I've never heard anything like this in my life.

sp 303 huh?

I got to check that out.

i would recommend the sp505 over the 303 its got the same sample/fx engine but its easier to program and edit waveforms
