digging + sampling? how does it all work?

ive got my mpc2000xl delivered yesterday,and im just settin everythin up.

im just lost on lookin for samples and fresh material at the mo,i know everyone says get ur own style but i like kanyes style.

is digging basically goin into a record store and diggin into all the crates of old vinyl and just listenin to them until u find what u want?

and when u find that rite sample u want from a track,how do u extract it from the vinyl or cd etc?
like when kanye does his sped-up soul samples.

do most peeps still look in vinyl for good material or cds? coz i dont have any turntables,but if vinyl is the way to go...ill look for some technics or some vestaxs.

Well, I don't think you listen to them right then and there. I myself just go to the salvation army, or by me there's a place called Horsefeathers (hippie shop with all kinds of stuff, and lots of LP's). I just grab what looks tight, or what might sound tight. I grab a lot of piano or brass orchestra stuff. It don't matter, grab what ever you want. The I just listen to them during a beat session and just sample whatever.

You don't really extract samples from vinyl. On your XL, look on the back of the unit, there are 2 inputs. Left and right channels. You need to hook the audio OUT from the record player (also from a mixer, if the audio OUTS of the player are going into it), to these inputs. For real, check out the manual, or download it from Akai's website. And don't play, actually read it.

You can also input sound into your PC and edit them in a .WAV editor, save them to disk, and load them into your MPC.

Man, I don't know about this type of sampling. Never did any hi-speed vocal stuff. Not ruling it out, just never done it before.

If you're not gonna scratch, you don't need a Technics. Go to Target or some where and just get something that'll play records. You can sample from any audio source really. CD player, tv, vcr, DVD...

EDIT: I don't know if you got a Target in the U.K. lol Just go somewhere where they sell audio equipment and pick up a turntable. Don't have to be fancy if you're not scratching.

to speed up your samples you either speed up the record or use the "16 levels" function on the mpc, that will do it. As far as sampling from cd's or vinyl, i think its really preference, I enjoy the part of finding a great sample from vinyl that i would have never bought on cd just because its so much better to buy 10 used lp's rather than 1 cd hoping you find something good.

do your homework. save your money. don't worry about getting all the high priced equiptment like the vestax, technics,etc. although they are good products. that was my first mistake. when you really start getting good at your mpc,and you realize your own style,look at sound modules. as for records for sampling, i prefer records. cd's are good if you can't find it on wax. anyway you can find your sound, create your own, don't worry about kanye's style. use his technics, flip it to your own. it is a good way to practice to learn your mp. but don't get caught up doing the same thing he does. listen to other producers and think about how they use the mpc to do certain things. try there tricks. then turn them into your tricks but better. practice makes perfect. you can't be a producer overnight. it takes time if you are dedicated.

Hey dude everyone says get your own style cos theres alot of truth in it! Really don't understand why people wanna just do something thats already being done? Wheres the fun in it? You'll probably be so busy trying to get your style similar to Kanye, that you'll forget to actually have fun making beats.

Whenever I go looking for records I normally just go round some charity shops. If you like the cover to a record and its cheap just buy it! I like to try new styles aswell so I might buy some really odd looking records. Its half the fun to me not knowing whats on the record, and then finding a real good sample, All for like £1!

It doesn't have to be just vinyl or just cd's, just sample whatever. Dvd's, Cassetes, anything. I find vinyl alot easier to sample though cos u can just lift the needle and put it wherever, saves skipping through cd's with a button.

^ Just go to charity shops, they always have piles of old records for like 20p each, you can't go wrong.

As for Kanye's style, it usually involves speeding up a soul sample and laying down some drums, which isn't too difficult. The difficult bit is finding the samples!
