When you are sampling...

When you are sampling do you look for whole bars that would make good loops or do you sample little things like stabs & horns.

WHOLE BARS (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4)
LITTLE THINGS (i.e. 1 1/2 BARS)

HOPE THIS IS NOT CONFUSING

You can sample anything dude what ever floats yor boat stabs riffs loops sounds i.e. farts belches ass whooping in my case today I caught my youngest son playing with a lighter after being told a 1000x not to play with fire so I whooped his *ss and sampled that But on the real side anything that sounds good to you you can sample unless you are one of those people who catch on really quick it's gonna take some time practice and experiment. listen to other peoples shit and dissect it one thing that you gotta remember DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

both, something ill do is record 9 seconds of a song, copy it 3 times and chop it/filter it in different ways and play around with it, then ill go to somewhere in the same song or record i sampled from originally and pick up 1 second horns, tails of instruments or vocals and the sh!t will blend perfectly. i just leave my MPC on all day and by the end of the day ill have all the pads full, usually then i put oit all together. ill have 4 good sequences per 1 program. i also have a set of samples of stabs that ill load up when i need em.

1) Do you think it would be ok to sample a 10-15 bar part of an old funk song and add my own drums, loops, bass, etc. (The sample is a piano solo)

What I sample? Anything

I've sampled even less than 1/2 bar stuff. Like I got this one Chinese thing and the lady is singing and at the very end of each word there is a little violin. So I took the tail of the violin from like 8 bars of the song and made my own violin loop with about 18 different samples. You can still hear a bit of the vocals at the beginning of some of em but it sounds cool.

Just do whatever you want. Don't let what you think is the right way to do things get in your way. I've never asked nobody how/what they sample and I don't have anybody teaching me but I'm getting there. Just do what feels right at the time.

If I sampled that paino solo I'd probably chop it up and make my own stuff with it. I wouldn't just straight up loop it.

Im on a 3K though, so its like filling one set on a 2000XL. Plus my first two banks are always pre loaded with MY drums/percussion.

which Song did Beyonce do over a Chi-Lite's sample?

"Crazy In Love" was over a Chi-Lites tune called (something like) "Are You My Woman?"

Another example: Angie Stone "I Wish I Didn't Miss You" over really long sections of The O'Jays "Back Stabbers".

It isn't like these tunes are just looping a break or a riff. They are such long samples they might as well have got the original master tapes & removed the original vocals.

I take 5-10 seconds of a song and import into Sound Forge, auto region with "drum beats" preset, and let it automatically find the zero crossings.

Afterwards, I batch process the whole lot with some warmness from one of my plugins, auto-fade the end point 300-500ms so it's smooth w/ no pops or clicks at the very end, normalize, go into Awave and make a PGM for 2kxl or PCG for Triton and load into my machines.

Perfection for me, works everytime.

I have not used a loop in a while though, usually just one shots and riffs.

I'm back on this question ...... Yes, do all this. When you have added all your own stuff listen to that without the original sample. You might find it holds together on its own. You might hear a new potential direction that you couldn't take the track in if that sample was still there.
