Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By HBishop Tue Mar 31, 2020 12:07 pm
Hi, I am thinking about buying an MPC 2000, however I’m totally new to using hardware and floppy disks etc and need some help understanding how it all works....for example where are songs and samples etc saved? Onto a floppy disk or in the actual machine? Having only used the mpc studio I have no clue how it all works... Thanks a lot

I’d suggest you get an MPC One. Don’t buy an MPC 2000.

If your gonna go older then I suggest 2kxl or 2500 with jjos.
2kxl has MANY advantages over 2k classic.

I know someone who is about to sell a good condition 2500 w/ jjos

and another person who is about to sell a 2kxl se2 (orange). :-D

The biggest advantages of the 2000 XL over the 2000 classic are:

Tilt screen (my neck will vouch)
Timestretching
Auto 16 pad slicing (basically takes your sample and spreads it equally across all the pads, very useful I think)
300,000 note capacity on the XL, 100,000 on the classic (the classic isn't going to sound stiff because of this, you'll be fine lol)
Easier to find a compatible CF drive (from what I've heard)

The classic is a solid machine and if you're anything like me, you won't be disappointed.

The way the floppies work is like this:

You put the boot disk in the drive after you power up, and when the MPC has booted, you take it out.
You sample in what you want, and all your sounds, sequences, programs, etc... are saved on the MPC's RAM.
When your session is over, you insert a blank floppy, go into disk (shift + 3), save, and you save your programs and sequences (type 1).

Don't leave a floppy in the drive if you're not using it, because the way the drive works on the classic is it still spins if you're not using it.

Do not let everyone telling you to go for the newer MPCs scare you off, but do understand that it is a commitment if you're going to go the floppy and classic way (lol).

Oh, and volatile memory.

You are not that someone I hope... You're not selling your older MPCs are you?

Oh and I forgot to add, the classic is much cheaper to find in the same condition, so if you're sure you won't get frustrated and chuck it out the window, consider the price too.

Less investment with your money, more with your time, sort of..

Cool, thanks.....what sort of price range should I be looking at for 2k and 2kxl?
