It's not the SP-303 that gives him that full sound... Partially it is because he samples in lo-fi which on the 303 (and 505 if used correectly) can add a nice warm grit to your sounds... It gives off a compressed lo-quality sound.... The real trick he uses on bass is the Limiter/compressor he uses... Madlib uses the Universal Audio 1176ln Limiter (approximately 2500 bucks I believe).... Every studio on earth has this limiter, but it's the way he uses it that gives him a really deep pumping bass sound (Check out Diverse's "Beyond, Beyond")... He actually disctorts the bass throyugh the limiter leaving him with a a really deep pumping feel to the bass...

This is an expensive limiter so the best thing most people can do is get the UAD-1 software that mimics this limiter and about a thousand other pieces of classic gear... I've eenn told by many people the sound quality is almost identical.... The UAD-1 costs about 400 bucks....

Long story short... It's the man not the gear....

The universal audio 1176 is a clone of the original Urei 1176.

Both are about the same price, and sound great.

he uses that to make some of his beats...whats so hard to believe, half of his tracks are straight loop jacks. he coulda made the whole madvillain album on the 303 because theres not one chop on the whole album - with the exception of 'fancy clown'. you can truncate on the 303 then theres no reason why he didnt make fancy clown on it either. some of those looops he didnt even add drums

You may be right, but most likely it is all he's usin... I mean Madlib only rocks loops and un-quantized drums... He could really do that on anything... He only uses the 303 cause it's portable and it has that lo-fi effect for which it has become popular....

But his sound only comes partially from the 303 cause he could run anything through the 1176 and overdrive it the way he does to get that really deep distorted sound he has...

The MAN not the GEAR...

don't get me wrong i love him and mf doom, and all that.
i was just saying i don't know if what he said in the interview i read was a 100 percent accurate. i mean hey he can use whatever the hell and i would probably like it for some trange reason.

AHe uses a lot of different stuff, but most of the released stuff is all 303. I got that from the man himself and from what I've personally heard come out of the 303, iI don't see a reason to doubt him. Remember that he was mainly an sp-1200 cat, so the features on the 303 are crazy in comparison, plus real time timestreatch and pitchshifting is really handy for loops, something that no Akai has to this day.

I have a friend that rocks a 303, and it is crazy what he gets out of it. of course, he's also used almost every sampler known to man, so he knows what he wants to get done on it and can use any interface exceptionally well.

if you can loop on it, madlib can make an album on it. simple as that. the 303 is 8 voice polyphonic right? and you can truncate your shit...built in effects, sequencer, what else do you need???

By elmacaco Wed Jan 26, 2005 1:20 am
with resampling the polyphony thing is non issue, especially for loop structures.

Sure he loops, but none of yall can do it like he does.

well..i dont know about that. i take it youve heard madvillainy, heard any of the original samples? meatgrinder is a loop, drums and all. not to mention every other track on the album. maybe im missing something hes doing, yeah hes got some ill beats, ill record collection..but comon, those straight loop jacks man - the question is , who CAN'T do that. granted kids eat it up..because its branded with the madlib name. i like alot of his shit tho, im not hating on him, hes got tons of quality..but 'no one can loop a record like he can' ..?? what am i missing

Does madlib uses the sp303 on the Quasimoto:The unseen album??

By en2 Wed Jan 26, 2005 4:08 am
the nastier the skills become, the more easily the technique can be explained. its so easy to do nowdays cause everyone utilizes madlibs techniques--hence do ur own shit cause that would harder. right?

By elmacaco Wed Jan 26, 2005 3:24 pm
Quasimoto was SP-1200.

Yeah I like madvillainy, but If I am not mistaken, they are layered loops. Meat grinder I believe has rhodes on it, is that a loop? sounds like he played it in to me.

The point is, looping is lame when it is brainless, it's like only playing hits when you DJ, it is much harder to come with something no one has heard before and get it to sound hot.

That's like saying anyone can just splah some paint on a canvas and be jackson pollock or that anyone could play a one note blues solo like bb king but they can't cause they aint and if they could then they would.....
